Why is it the 'queer eye'? Doesn't this make it seem like all gay people inherently have better fashion sense? The five guys are consultants who happen to be gay, not consultants because they are gay.

I think all those shows are odd. The other day my mom and little sister were watching What Not to Wear, and I thought it was ridiculous that anyone would be publicly ridiculed just for a few fashion tips; can't they just ask their friends?
I also think it's strange that a lot of the straight women I know will put up with incredibly nasty, snippy comments from their gay friends but the second a straight guy makes a disparaging remark he gets the cold shoulder. That's just a spur-of-the-moment observation, however...

I think it's an interesting idea; however, personally I'd rather consult female friends on fashion tips, not gay men. After all, the whole point of dressing up fashionably is to get the ladies :P

Hah! Chicks will just dress you with whatever they see other people wearing fashionably. I think the gay dudes are adding an extra touch. The show is a very interesting mix of bringing humanity to gay culture, as well as, acceptance. Some critics like it. It's not competitive. It's funny and a kind of blend of Martha Stewart meets GQ magazine. They seem to transform a lot of dumpy guys, though.

I'm not gay, but I was wondering if gay people found the show extremely stereotypical and offensive? Not to mention the term "queer?" Like the gay version of Banzai?

I watched the first 3 episodes and thought it was pretty good. I'm not sure how gay people feel about it. Would it be analogous to having 5 Asian Feng Shui consultants go around and remaking your house? Would you guys be offended by that? I'm not sure...just haven't thought about it.

I definitely see it being like that... and as far as the term 'queer'... From what I understand, the term is trying to be 'reclaimed' and made positive, so under certain contexts it's acceptable. But I was told not to run around using it because many people in the gay community still find it offensive, particularly if it comes from someone who isn't gay.

I think it's because gay guys (generally) do a lot more than (many) straight guys to clean themselves up and make sure they're at least semi-presentable.

Not all gay guys have a good dress sense. And not all Straight guys have a bad dress sense.
All the gay guys I know could pass for redneck truckers or farmers.

Five? One is too many. But the fab 5 take care of different areas -- culture, dining, etc.

I like it, too. The kids can watch it without being inundated with PG-13 or R rated stuff. Although my daughter did ask what a gay was. I said it was boys liking boys, or something, and she said, "yuck". I guess I have some work to do in expanding her mind. There are some coy sexual references but the kids never get -- like on the one episode where the blonde indicates that everyone loves a pearl necklace. Or when he indicated that this underwear he bought for a straight guy made "it" look nice.

Found something in the show I had to disagree with:
At the end of the show, each of the fab 5 gives some tips. The personal grooming guy made the comment that you don't have to wash your hair everyday -- that "some of your best looks come after the 2nd or 3rd day". Unfortunately, after the 2nd or 3rd day, for me, my wife would be puking at the "outside smell" in my 2nd-day doo. ![]()
