weird shit...met a senior designer @ A & F here over the wkd...she was ASIAN...i shoulda/forgot to ask her bout that shit that went down last year....


-hmmm....u think she's a 'sell-out' or what not? she was originally from hong kong? but moved to UK, than to here in columbus to work for a/f headquarters...she had a british accent. she seemed real nice...

just curious what would you guys do...should i call her out on it or ask her what she thought? i don't wanna piss her off or nothing...but, i'm gonna see her again i bet...

I think you should ask what she thought about it--Not confrontationally, but casually.

If she responds comfortably and her convictions differ from your own, then let the jousting begin.

Although I can't say for sure, I think that's what I probably would have done if I truly wanted to know her feelings on the issue.

I know a Taiwanese-American woman who worked for A&F as a merchant. There are a couple of Asians there. Not the kind who'd raise up a big fuss, but they are yellow.

My Taiwanse ex works at A & F in finance and I doubt he considers himself a sell-out or betrayer to the Asian community. What one might find important, another may not or not as much. In this economy, ideals and principles over money and putting food on the table isn't going to mean much.

Many non-smokers work for Phillip Morris or RJ Reynolds. If you've ever worked for an investment bank, chances are you've done work for a cigarette company. If you've ever worked in a clothing store or bought clothes from a national chain, it's probable you've just contributed to child labor.

Association to negative events, past or current, may not be as direct as someone who works for A & F or buys clothes straight from the hands of factory owners in Malaysia, but they're there.

Remember our huge debate on Yellowworld. Some people did not find what A & F did was offensive. Others just wrote it off as an insensitive mistake. Many more claimed outcry yet kept the A & F clothing they have now and probably still wear it. A job is a job and a huge part of someone's life. If someone paid you a lot, it would be a lie to proclaim that you wouldn't work for them if they didn't personally affect you in a negative way.

The question to ask this girl is to ask her personnal opinion on that A&F incident and if it seems to her that A&F has some sort of anti-Asian thing going on internally.

When this whole AF thing first came up, didn't I post that I HAVE met a fashion consultant for A&F who was KOREAN.... And talking to her was one of my biggest reasons for not thinking the company meant any wrongdoing.........

1. Permanently remove the entire line of offensive "Asian" T-shirts.
2. Publish a public apology from the Company's Chief Executive Officer, Michael S. Jeffries, in the form of an one-page advertisement in all major national newspapers. Publicly display this apology in all of the Company's stores, the main page of the website, and the next issue of the quarterly catalogue. 
3. Encourage consumers to return "Asian" T-shirts by guaranteeing unconditional refunds and providing additional incentives (e.g. vouchers, discount coupons) for returned shirts. 
4. Restore public image and mend relationships with minorities and consumers by increasing philanthropy for non-profit organizations which promote racial awareness and sensitivity.
5. Increase diversity in the Company's catalogues, advertisements, and promotional materials. Develop an educational advertisement campaign which promotes the diversity of our nation and encourages understanding of diverse cultures and histories. (See, e.g., Timberland's "Give Racism the Boot" advertisement campaign)
6. Work with the Campaign in hiring a new consultant team to ensure company-wide sensitivity to minority issues, improve diversity training for all employees, and increase minority representation in all levels of the Company's workforce.
