Interesting. Whites from some middle of nowhere rural high school throw a party on private property keeping out other races, and it's national news picked up in Salon. ABCs and KAs at a nationally renowned high school threw an Asians-only party on school property, keeping out anyone with the wrong facial features, and I got shit for pointing it out in the school paper.

On the bright side, please welcome these folks to the 21st century. This school near New Orleans is holding its first integrated prom. Ever.

"My parents taught me not to hate anybody black but not to date them either," said Jennifer Becnel, 17, a member of this year's school-sponsored prom committee. "That's one thing that always got on my nerves. If it's a date, it doesn't matter if he's white or black."

"The older [residents] aren't ready to let go yet," [former School Board member] Becnel said. "They've seen them (white and black students) holding hands, and they don't want them to be holding hands."

"It made sense to everybody," said Seth Folse, 18, who graduated from St. James High last year after attending what could be the last all-white prom at the parish-owned west bank reception hall. "The school puts their prom on, and we do ours. . . . I didn't see anything wrong with it. It was a legacy that kept going and going."

i think its only inappropriate if the majority makes a social function exclusively their own, but when a minority does it it's ok. It has nothing to do with race, for example rich people can have their own clubs and war veterans have their own functions, they're just preservation of own identity against mainstream society

The school has 439 students, 232 of them black. McCrary and a white friend passed out fliers informing students of all races that they would be welcome at the May 9 prom at nearby Fort Valley State University.

It maybe too late now, but the other students should put on a prom that counteracts the bigots. :huh:

why does everyone keep referring to a "black prom?" isn't there only one white prom and one integrated prom? i don't think people should mislead others into thinking blacks are segregating themselves just cuz whites are.

Yeah, big deal. If a bunch of adults want to teach racism to high school teenagers, so be it. This is America, after all; they've got their hands, feet and head...or whatever.
