CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES,
a film by Eric Byler Starring Michael Idemoto, Jacqueline Kim, Eugenia Yuan, and Matt Westmore YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE! It blew me away at the SF Int'l Asian American Film Festival. Stars four outstanding API actors, written by Eric Byler (who's Hapa), and has won nominations for Best Indie under $500,000 and for Best Supporting Actress for Jacqueline Kim. Roger Ebert declared it the "Best of the Fest" at the Honolulu Film Festival. Like BLT, it stars API's yet does not really focus on a racial theme, although Hapa's might disagree... C H I C A G O Starts Friday, May 2nd, 2003 at Village Theaters WaterTower 157 East Chestnut, Chicago, IL, 60611 S A N F R A N C I S C O Starts Friday, May 9th, 2003 at UA Galaxy 4, 1285 Sutter Street San Francisco, CA. 91409 415.474.8790 Potentially added (if it does well): Berkeley, San Jose, Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, Honolulu, New York, Washington D.C., Boston. Check out: http://www.charlottesometimesthemovie.com/ (not to be confused with www.charlottesometimes.com, which is a lesbian dominatrix themed site) So far, only SF and Chicago S H O R T S Y N O P S I S Michael is a Japanese American auto mechanic torn between a restrictive traditional upbringing and his own potent dreams and desires. Secretly in love with the girlishly sexy, Chinese American Lori, Michael represses his longing (and growing resentment) to maintain their cherished friendship. When he encounters the mysterious Darcy at the local nightspot, Michael is forced to choose between a daring tryst with an alluring stranger, and the habitual comfort of his bittersweet obsession. |

HEY ALL:
I promised Eric Byler I would conglomerate, paste and post all his  NASTY SEX (and relationship) QUESTIONS  so here goes. I couldn't decide whether to post this in a new place in Men or Women, or just leave it in A&E, but if the moderators :luv: :luv: :luv: have any ideas, please go for it! Eric promises a nice "Charlotte Sometimes" poster for all the juicy answers. OH - and identify your gender, cuz we're keeping track (asian stats geek stereotype rules!), and we're tabulating answers and comparing with the Giant Robot site and www.manja.org (SF Bay Area). This is eric the weirdo stealth asian who directed "charlotte sometimes." below is a sneak preview of the way I'm going to tell folks what the film is about. SEVEN QUESTIONS for men and for women. it's a game. when you answer, choose a sex (if you want you can answer as if you're the opposite sex, or do an answer for both). i ask for a gender because I'll be keeping score. QUESTION ONE: is afterglow showerproof? QUESTION TWO: if she loves you more than you love her, is it fair to stay? QUESTION THREE: Does the race of your lover have political implications? QUESTION FOUR: If so, is this as true for men as it is for women? QUESTION FIVE: can a woman enjoy sex with a man she despises? QUESTION SIX: if you love her but you pretend not to love her, if you lust for her but behave as if you feel no lust, if you cloak yourself as her "brother" or her "friend," can she ever TRULY see you as a man? QUESTION SEVEN: Are Asian American women complicit in the "emasculation" of Asian American men? QUESTION EIGHT: Will you go out with me? (Okay, that's my question, not Eric's - but I have to sneak a little sumpin' sumpin' in there for pasting all this together  and Eight is the magic number! ) And remember: for really hot revealing answers, Eric will mail you full-sized posters. |

hi tapestrybabe, thanks for noticing.
Haku, what is the rant room how do I get there and good luck finding a date using "charlotte sometimes" as a ice breaker! At Ebert's festival last weekend, a Caucasian man got up to ask a question during the q/a for "Shall We Dance?" and instead of asking Ebert he asked the woman next to him, also Caucasian, to marry him. He spoke in Japanese by the way. Later, Stephen Wang of Rotten Tomatoes joked that chances were slim and none the same would happen after "charlotte sometimes." Things are going well in Chicago. Reviews are starting to come in for Friday's theatrical release. "A WONDERFUL MOVIE!!! Sylish, self-assured, reminiscent of Robert Altman in its ever-fascinating obliqueness." --Peter Sobczynski, Liberty Suburban Chicago Newspapers "A complex snapshot of twentysomething love and desire in an Asian American context. Friendship in Byler's world is always tainted by the hunger for something more. Sex is a detached entity that either torments or consumes." --Alex Posorske, New City "Every once in a while I go to see a movie, out of maybe 400 movies I see in a year, that with its authority, and its mood, and its tone, and its tension, simply captures you; totally absorbs you. And that's what Charlotte Sometimes did to me." --Roger Ebert, at Roger Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival See you in the rant room if I ever find it.... EB |

Just read that CS did very well in Chicago last night, and the day screenings today have been twice as crowded as yesterday's matinees!
Folks in Chi-town, represent! And big thanks to Roger Ebert, who seems to be a big fan and defender of APA films recently! That speaks to our quality - the Holy Man of film crit has endorsed our rising stars. And Eric, if you ever visit here - what's up with MC Hammer - has he been "throwin' down for the APA community"? Where? Please, Hammer, don't hurt 'em! |

Hey DragonKnight:
If you can make it to San Jose on May 10th, the evening show will feature ERIC BYLER the director and ALL FOUR LEADS in a q and a after the show. There may even be an afterparty, but I don't know details. In SF on Friday May 9th, the primetime show will feature the same Dream Team fielding Q's, and then we'll all head to an afterparty hosted by www.manja.org Then you can catch it again on June 20th in LA with all your SoCal pals! SoCal represent! |
