what are your opinions of cnn's coverage on operation iraqi freedom? do you think it's a fair coverage? too biased? why was president bush angry at the amount of media coverage on the war? most of their stories are slanted in his favor. how about airing pics of p.o.w.'s? do you think that is insensitve? or pulling the families on television. what is the point of that? what are your thoughts?

I've come to accept the reality that CNN and other news networks (ESPECIALLY FOX!!!) are not informational whatsoever. It's more persuasion than information.
I have no problem with the media airing pictures of POWs. I don't think it's insensitive at all, in my opinion, because it seems like they are aired for the purpose of the American public to look at and to respect their courage and hopefully to offer prayer or hope to the families. In my opinion, at least.

hmm. i'm not sure what the beef is b/w Bush and CNN.. but in general, i personally feel like the media is TOO involved in the war.
I kinda feel like they over dramatize and sensationalized a lot of the aspects of war, and analyze every LITTLE statement anyone makes and use it as law.. and then get all mad when something doesn't turn out that way. I dunno.. maybe thats what they are suppose to do, but I think its overbearing. |

Bush became angry only after reporters started questioning the war strategy he had signed off on.
i think the coverage has been as unbiased as is possible for a country that is a participant in the war. in other words, biased but not extremely so. the 24/7 coverage and examination of every detail and comment is excessive but merely reflects the direction our society is heading in as a whole. airing pics of POWS and interviewing family members is fine, in my opinion, as long as nothing graphic or distasteful is shown. |

I think CNN is not showing ALL sides of the story-violating basic principles of journalism.

The media has a lot riding on this war. Of course they're gonna try to persuade you into thinking it's a good thing. Besides, if I'm mistaken, there's some kind of regulations about what the media can say or do during a time of war... Right?

FOX news was horrible in the 9/11 coverage, practically inciting Americans to go beat up the first Arab/Arab American they saw. CNN isn't doing much better...
Has anyone been watching the CNN war coverage? I'm wishing the best for Dr. Sanjay Gupta :) Notice how they sent him off to go sit in the bunker in the middle of the bombing raids while the clean-cut white dude was sipping martinis across the river?

don't forget, everyone is making money except for the soldiers. so there's bias that will allow them to make as much money as possible, hey, its the american way, :gross:

Isn't all media biased? I mean, why single out CNN? Obviously FOX News is biased towards conservatives and right-wing views, etc. The other networks are pretty much the same, no one actually does news fair and balanced.

the only news source that I can say that isn't biased is probably the economist...and the wall street journal is pretty good

Broadcast journalism became an oxymoron sometime in the 80's when TV news departments were transformed into a revenue generating entity as opposed to a revenue eating public service. The coverage of the was has been "sanitized for your protection". There are estimates that thousands of Iraqi's have been killed, yet hardly any dead bodies have ever been seen on the networks. Faux news is so slanted to the right it's more of an editorial network. and CNN and MSNBC ( which are hated by conservatives) coverage, is only slighly better, (although being slightly better relative to Fox is not saying a whole lot).

i was a freshman in college when the gulf war started...
and i remember during that time... when they showed the war on tv... i felt like it turned out to be some type of tv show and entertainment to watch... and currently... i admit... i dont watch tv in my apt... cuz i dont get any reception... so i have no idea what cnn is showing on the air... however... i remember after the 48 hours was up... i ended up listening to 1010 wins news here... its like a 24/7 hour news radio station.... and i got tired of it all... IRAQI OPERATION FREEDOM, AMERICA AT WAR... SHOWDOWN WITH SADDAM... i cant convey the tone of voice and how they say it here on the internet... or even the music that they play in the background... that makes it all dramatic sounding and what not... but i just got annoyed with it all and stopped listening... like once again, as if they are turning it into some kinda entertainment...
