HONGKONG - Police in south-west China busted a baby-smuggling scam and found 27 newborn babies - stacked on top of one another and packed in luggage cases - on board a coach.

Guangxi police had received information earlier this week that a bus heading for the eastern province of Anhui would be smuggling babies.

The authorities, acting on the tip-off, set up road blocks along the route and stopped a suspicious-looking passenger coach near Nanning, the Apple Daily reported.

A search turned up a shocking find: 27 babies, stacked on top of one another and squeezed into luggage cases, were found on the back seat of the coach.

Most of the victims were between two and five months old but some were merely a few days old and still had their umbilical cords intact.

When they were discovered, one of them was dead and another in critical condition, the report said.

A doctor, who attended to the babies, said many of them were very weak after their ordeal because as many as four babies were packed into each bag.

According to media reports, 38 passengers and the bus driver were detained for questioning, but police have not identified the mastermind.

The report said human traffickers were lured by the high profits involved in the illegal trade.

In Anhui province, a baby girl can be sold for 2,000 yuan (S$430) and a baby boy can fetch about 10,000 yuan, the report added.

this may sound crude, and i don't usually believe in the death sentence, but in this case, whoever is responsible needs to be executed - china style:
