i'm feeling kinda split. if he stays, thats a powerful image to campaign against. but if he resigns, then the governor may appoint a democrat to his seat. and if any one republican senator switches sides, then the senate turns democratic again.

The Republicans will probably remove him pending continued internal pressure. He is valuable to them but too much of a liability. The Jan 6 deciding date is 3 weeks from now, so it's pretty obvious the date was set up as a delaying factor to let the issue pan out in public first and perhaps die out. However, it is a domino effect and Republicans, even Bush, are distancing themselves. Lott's not going to be in a good position as a leader if he's a pariah. It's like Newt Gingrich all over again (remember him? no? exactly.).

The thing about resigning is I'm not sure what kind of resigning people are calling for. I always understood it to mean as stepping down as (soon-to-be) Majority Leader, not from his publicly-elected post as Senator from Mississippi. For the entire nation to call for that type of resignation is a violation of his constituents' rights. They voted for this man, and if they want him to resign, it's their choice, not ours.

My personal feeling is that the media overstepped journalistic bounds in the reporting of the statement:

I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for President, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years, either.

Now, how the media extrapolated that into "this country needed segregation then, and the country needs segregation now," I don't know. The first time I read it was from an AP report and my first reaction was why was this report spoonfeeding this conclusion to the reader. Who is the "we" and what are the "problems?" The guy is at Thurmond's 100th birthday party and of course he's buttering him up. The only question remains, is he praising Thurmond or certain parts of Thurmond's presidential race platform? I'm sorry, but that's really an exercise for the reader, Mr. Reporter.

What's funny is that the media didn't really jumpstart the firestorm. The New York Times didn't even report it at first. The first action didn't come from the Democrats. In fact, Daschle said the statements were misconstrued. The Republican machine did it -- Karl Rove wanted to replace Lott with Frist -- and everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Not to be left alone, the Democrats then followed and right now we have some commentators calling the entire Republican Party racist. One day Lott was dismissing his remarks as misconstrued, and the next, he was apologizing for them. That pressure came directly from Bush. Lott is now fighting the machine that gave control of Congress to Republicans, and it doesn't look good.

Lott has repeatedly apologized for comments that some viewed as racist, and on Monday he appeared on the Black Entertainment Network to defend his record. Senate Republicans will meet on Jan. 6 to weigh Lott’s fate.

A ONE-SENTENCE announcement Monday said the meeting was called after consultation with both Lott, R-Miss., and Sen. Don Nickles of Oklahoma, who called for a new election to replace Lott.
      “There needs to be some closure soon,” said Sen. Conrad Burns of Montana, who joined a growing list of Republicans voicing concern about the impact of the furor on the party.
      “Sen. Lott’s comments were inappropriate and do not reflect the party of compassionate conservatism, but I want to hear from my colleagues before I make any decision about who should lead the party and the Senate,” Burns said.
      Lott needs at least 26 of the 51 Senate Republican votes to retain his job as Senate majority leader. Citing sources, NBC’s Russert reported on the “Today” show Tuesday that, so far, Lott is far short of that number.
