How to get rid of asian afro hair ?

Right now, my hair is pretty much like an asian afro. My hair is round and about the same length at all sizes although it is slightly longer at the top. Also, my hair seems to just naturally stick up straight and is rather short right now. I want to grow my hair out for a while so I can get hair that you know is the asian actor hair with bangs in front and is kind of spiky in the middle.
How do I get rid of the afro? I heard I should thin my hair, do I think I should thin it on the sides, back, and top? or just the top? Also, is there even a point to layer it now when my hair is really short? Are there any other methods I can make my hair just lay down instead of stick up? Oh yeah, to get the hairstyle like the dude in the picture, should the top be lot longer than the sides and top?

i've got the asian afro hair too. Spent all of high school trying to achieve that kind of haircut you're talking. Thinning shears don't help. Growing it out doesn't help. These days I just shave it ...

LOL. I have a similar type of hair but I figured out how to get the spikes I want without the pain and misery ($$$). You may have to go for a specialied short cut to fit your physique and use alot of styling gel or other such hair products to get the desired look. That's what I do depending on how I happen to feel that day or according to the occasion. It's pretty hard to get that HK style haircut with curly hair.

I'm sure other dudes here may give better suggestions but that's what I do and it gets results. (meaning attention from girls )

Probably might have to let it grow for awhile before you can style it to the way you want it to look.

I have the classic asian afro hair myself. I don't really go for the HK/Korean/Japanese long hair with bangs so I usually go to a Sicilian barber's every 4-6 weeks. They do this great cut where it's short on the sides and back (a "4") and longer ("chipped") on the top. It's perfect for my face shape and it leaves me room to add a layered effect with some styling clay.

Dude, this is uncanny... I used to get a #3 cut on the sides but found that the balance wasn't quite right if I wanted to leave the top longer.

Yeah that is my pic in the avatar... although as they say in the design professions, "most things look better reduced". I also wear glasses about 90% of the time and that makes me look like a completely different person altogether. Which is a shame I suppose, but I went for years without wearing glasses and it was like being partially blind.

I wished I had straight up hair like that. Instead my hair is hard and heavy and goes straight down. With your hair I would go straight for this due:

Long layered Asian hair is achieved through thinning and tapering to a point. Some stylists prefer razor some prefer scissors. Bring a pic of what you'd eventually like to have to a stylist because they don't read minds. Don't expect to look like male model in picture after. Expect to look like you but with longer, tapered layers. You will probably need product to style like light wax. Grow out is a bitch.

I recommend an Asian stylist because the thin and taper is a different technique. Personally, I prefer Japanese stylists but anyone who can work with Asian hair would be fine.

i second this, as i got my hair cut last week after letting it all grow out since the ex-GF cut it back in September 2008.

Sometimes I wear a winter hat to mat my hair down; it usually works pretty well depending on the shape of the hat.

thanol- Whenever I wear hats/caps it really mats my hair but then it is like too flat... it looks weird on me anyway.
