Robberies Targeting Asians in Maryland

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police 4th District Investigative Section are investigating a robbery that occurred last night in the Colesville area of Silver Spring. Detectives believe this event may be related to three previous robberies in Montgomery County and others in the District of Columbia where the victims have been Asian.
On October 8, 2008, at 5:53 p.m., police from the 4th District responded for a robbery that had just occurred in the 800 block of Stratford Manor Terrace. Preliminary investigation revealed that the victims had returned home from an Asian business establishment in Wheaton and had parked their car in the driveway outside of the garage at the Stratford Manor address. The first victim, a 48-year-old Asian female, had walked into the garage with her belongings and was attempting to enter the home. She was approached by the first suspect who assaulted her, took personal property, and fled on foot. He is described as a black male, 16-17-years-old, 5’ 6” to 5’ 9” tall, wearing a black-hooded-sweatshirt and blue jeans. The hood of the sweatshirt was pulled down, partially covering his face.
The second suspect approached the second victim, a 52-year-old Asian female who was still with the car. The suspect demanded her property, removed it from the car, and fled on foot. He is described as a black male, 16-17-years-old, 5’ 6” to 5’ 9” tall, wearing a brown-hooded- sweatshirt. He also had his hood pulled down covering his face.
In the previous events, the suspect descriptions were similar, the victims were Asian, and they were returning home from Asian business establishments. The dates, times, and locations of the previous Montgomery County occurrences are:
• Sunday, September 21 at approximately 6:30 p.m., 2nd District officers responded to the 4600 block of Oxford Street in Kensington.
• Friday, September 19 at approximately 12:56 p.m., 4th District officers responded to the 12000 block of Milton Street in Wheaton.
• Monday, September 1 at approximately 1:45 p.m., 2nd District officers responded to the unit block of Spruce Tree Court in Bethesda.
