In this article, one commentor makes a very apt assessment of the area around Columbia U's campuses:

The police do not have to look too far to find the guilty parties. Firstly the good Rev Al for selling the myth that these parasites are the real victims of racial injustice and have to take no personal responsibility in their life. Secondly, Fifty Cent and all the other minstrel rappers for glorifying the thug lifestyle that these monsters try to emulate. Thirdly, the parents who brought these vermin into the world and failed to instill any basic values.

I wonder if this is the area where that egoistic furry guy, Ken Eng, lives - he was jailed last year for threatening his neighbour and daughter over their noisy dog with hammer?

The same thing happened to a white NYU student in the same area in uptown Manhattan in 2006. The parallels between the two incidents are striking. In each case a pack of wilding youths some as young as 13 in pursuit of university students who ends up struck dead by a speeding car trying to evade their pursuers.

Interestingly the same thing happened in Howard Beach, Queens years ago in 1986 where a mob of white kids chased a black dude into traffic and he got killed, I think on the Belt Parkway.

The irony of everything is just perplexing.

The NYPD hate-crimes unit is probing a report that a white NYU student killed by a car in Harlem was fleeing a gang of black teenagers screaming "Get whitey!" sources said yesterday. If the report proves true, the violence could turn out to be an eerie replay in reverse of the infamous 1986 Howard Beach murder, where a black man was chased into traffic and killed by a group of white bigots. he 20-year-old student, John Broderick Hehman, died yesterday, six days after the attack. The sources said Hehman might have been targeted as a soft mark for robbers after the teenage gang spotted the caring urban-studies major handing pocket change to a wheelchair- bound man near the corner of 125th Street and Park Avenue Saturday night.

The gang of youths, some of them as young as 11, had been smoking pot inside a nearby Popeye's fast-food eatery at 8:30 p.m. when they spotted Hehman walking by and then stopping to help the handicapped man. An anonymous caller later tipped the CrimeStoppers hot line that a group of youths screamed, "Get Whitey!" and ran toward him. Witnesses said Hehman fled into traffic against the light and was hit by a Mercedes-Benz traveling east on 125th Street.

Four teenagers are facing charges in the death of an NYU student who was hit by a car earlier this month in Harlem in what some are calling a hate crime.

Hassan Mayfield and Andre Johnson, both 15, face second degree murder and robbery charges. Charges are pending against two 13 year olds.

Investigators believe the four chased 20-year-old Broderick Hehman into the street on April 1st. Hehman was hit by a silver Mercedes on East 125th Street near Park Avenue. He died three days later.

Eric Adams of 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement says Hehman died for two reasons.

"One, because he made a decision to do a kind act for someone. Second because of his ethnicity; that's unacceptable," he said.

"Very simply, if the reports are accurate that one of the people in the group said, 'get the white boy,' that's a hate crime," said civil rights attorney Norman Siegel.

The racial tension between blacks, whites and Asians in NYC is really, really bad. I see it firsthand everyday.

No that happened in Queens, across the East River from Manhattan. Believe me there are alot of angry militant Asians rolling deep in that boro.

It started when a Black Baptist evangelical church asked the owner of the building to evict the owner of a music store, but ended with the clothing store the owner of the building had there being torched.

So the blacks in the area have been uppity for being displaced by Asians and "oppressed" by whites and "Jews".

So if all the three teens associated in this case are black, then their "prank" isn't remotely related to the endemic poverty black face in the area. It's just something to do after school is over, like pulling wings off flies.

You'd think Rev. Al would be raising money for more youth intervention for black youth in the area...

Its not as bad as it used to be, between the black and Jewish communities as of late, since the riots that occurred in Boro Park Brooklyn some time back where hundreds of Hassidic and Orthodox Jewish youths went apeshit, detroying property and setting fires in protest after a NYPD arrest of 75-year-old community elder Arthur Schick.

Hard to say. That is a very complex situation. There are many, many different factors here that come into play.

Could've guessed that without reading the article. It is Morningside Heights after all. There's a reason why Columbia campus is pretty much isolated from its surrounding neighborhood.
