MTV’s new Laguna Beach will be in Brooklyn

w/ a track record that includes the likes of laguna beach and maui fever, u'd prolly think that a show set in a high school w/ 49% asian pop would have a 99.9% rich spoiled white cast. i'm not that pessimistic. i think they'll at least whittle it down to 99.8%.

but seriously, is it average for ppl to have to test into hs in brooklyn? i'm guessing not but i don't know.

Just read on Gawker about a pilot MTV is working on, based in my part of the city:

MTV’s newest soon-to-be hit show is Brooklyn. The premise is to paint an accurate picture for America of what life is like for the average Brooklyn high school student. Brooklyn, New York is made up of the Caribbean Americans of Flatbush, the Hasidic Jews of Crown Heights, the hipsters of Williamsburg and the peacenik families of Park Slope. The infamous Fort Greene projects, artsy DUMBO, upscale Brooklyn Heights and the soon-to-be arriving NBA Brooklyn Nets.

They’ve picked H.S. 430 Brooklyn Technical High School, better known as Brooklyn Tech, as the site because “With a student body of 4,000, BTHS represents the many faces of teenagers in Brooklyn. Rich, poor, Asian, Black, White, Hispanic and everyone in between come here to learn. ”
How much do you bet the show will revolve around a group of white kids, with occasional appearances from a token black friend? Even though the school is 49% Asian?

i think it'll be mostly black kids, some will act like thugs, some will fill the "wise negro" role, maybe with a few Asian nerds and wiggers thrown in. to MTV, Brooklyn == black people.

NYC has a unified public school system, so the administration isn't divided up into the boroughs. As such, the kids have to test into the top schools, including Brooklyn Tech, Bronx Science and Stuyvesant. Kids from all over the city go to those schools. This means that many, if not most, of the kids at Brooklyn Tech don't even live in Brooklyn.

NYC is literally the most diverse city in the country, with a few in Cali a close second. That's why so many people were pissed with shows on NBC like Friends and Will and Grace. Nary a black person, except when Ross snagged hot ass Aisha Tyler and Grace got Gregory Hines.
