It's also hilarious when you observe FOBs who consider one of their own "whitewashed" because he prefers American muscle cars to rice rockets.

Also, there is nothing more annoying than a person who goes like, "I'm Asian, but I'm really whitewashed", as if they are apologizing for it. Rarely will you hear someone say, "I'm black, but I'm really an Uncle Tom" or something stupid like that. And just by having to announce your whitewashedness, that indicates that you are all too awkward about your Asianness and are not truly whitewashed; the truly washed wouldn't care either way.

if you're an asian were born in the us and don't know about anything about items such as, but not limited to:
1) influx of chinese immigrants to the us during and after the gold rush and its consequences
2) japanese internment during world war ii
3) modern day issues like the "kung fool" masks and the abercrombie and fitch shirts; wen ho lee and captain james yee; etc
or any other similar events - if you don't know even just one of them, i would call you "historically unaware", and since history plays a large part in culture, i would call you "culturally unaware". and i've known people who didn't know about any of it.

my roommate calls me twinkie because im half white and hardly remember how to speak japanese, so i dont speak it. not because im NOT proud of who i am but because i am proud and dont want to look like an idiot if i say somthing wrong. but hes a japanophile white guy so i guess were even.

Well being culturally unaware is something that is inevitable by increasing generations. All North Americans immigrants from East Asia will face this someday.

There's nothing inevitable about immigrant assimilation. Chinese in Malaysia have avoided it for generations. Any community can do the same if they have stronger internal institutions (e.g. schools).

True. But in places like Canada and America, where "cultural mosaic" or "melting pot" are the dominant ideals, I do think it's inevitable.

i wouldn't let myself be whitewashed, but if other asians want to, they can go ahead and do whatever they want... its not like its harmful to anyone else
