Thumbs up

One good thing about the internet is that you can learn about other cultures whome you may not have much contact with. If some day when we finally make contact with other beings, we will do so very clumsy. Because we have to know what these new beings are like. (We can send them Art Bell)
In America we segregate ourselves by our races. Euro-Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, African Americans, and Hispanics. I have seen on college campuses where people of the same race(mention above) are sitting in their own group. But when 911 happened I thought we all got passed this; now we are back where we started from.
So, what I'm saying is this: we are all Americans, and we should try to get to know the other person. We just might have a few things in common.

Is that why when white people talk to me, they ask "Are you Chinese?" instead of asking "Are you American?"

^-- Because if you're living and working here in America... it isn't unreasonable to assume that you are, in fact, American.

Nope. When people talk to other white people or even black people, they ask "Are you American?" They don't ask "Are you Irish? ARe you Nigerian?"

THis happens to Hispanics too to a lesser extent.

ummm i think you mean, they don't even ask "are you American?" I mean it'd be pretty weird to walk up to a random black guy, "Say, are you American?" "American" is always implied, never expressly asked, except in foreign countries.

but, like i said, those foreign countries don't count cuz The US is the Best of the West and Beats the Rest. :D

sadly, i'm completely sober. No drugs, no alcohol, and even had a good amount of sleep. :(

but ehh i'm not serious. Or maybe I am but don't want to admit it?

As someone said about me in HS: "good thing is he only means 25% of the things he says. bad thing is, we don't know what 25% that is." So i like to keep my Lamaist mystery. ;)

Obviously, if you speak with an accent from any country people are going to assume that you are not American. I assume that most people I meet Asian or whatever, are American unless they state otherwise. In Louisiana, for example, they speak French and English, but they are still considered Americans.
Asians have been in this country for centuries.
Those people who asked: "Where are you from?" are just plain ignorant. By the way, my doctor is from India and he has an accent. I think he is an citizen now.

I don't speak with an accent, and people think I'm from out of country...

My friend Mike--Vietnamese--asked me today whether or not I'm a citizen...(there are a lot of different cultures in the Bay Area, so I very much thought it to be a compliment)...

Even the various Ethiopians around the area asked me where was I from...

I've been thought to be:

*Puerto Rican

*Cuban

*African
why do you always specify your "friend's" ethnicity whenever you quote or speak of them?

Well of course, now we americans have also ways looks the same. All we had to do was clear out a few Indians and defeat the Spanish. -_-.

white people been around for a while too, but Russian immigrants who speak bad English still get tons of shit. also a huge proportion of Asians are foreign born, and outside certain population centers it's still as likely as not that an average Asian you meet is not yet a US citizen. especially those who are over around 30 or so.

Personally I wouldn't see asking someone with an accent as "where are you from" to be as ignorant as you make it out to be.
