Jake Long - hapa cartoon character?
An article in yesterday's NY Times mentioned Jake Long:
"Children's television reflects that diversity. Disney now shows "American Dragon: Jake Long," featuring a pint-size superhero who is half-Asian and half-Caucasian, hangs out with blacks and whites and consults a wizened Asian elder. " Anyone seen this? |

I like that web page. It allows you to do roll-over wave file scratching.

Re: Jake Long - hapa cartoon character?
I've seen it. I don't care for it. Dante Bosco or "Ruffio" fame voices Jake. Yep, Jake's hapa, his dad's Caucasian and his mom's Chinese, I think. The Grandpa character just seems like a rip off of Mr. Miyagi. The show doesn't have any Asian writers or directors.

What? No mention of Juniper Lee??
Then again I don't know if she's hapa or just asian-american. I haven't actually seen an episode of her parents. Then again I don't watch this. I only seen this on cartoon network a few times. http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/tv_shows/juniperlee/

Re: Jake Long - hapa cartoon character?
I've seen part of Juniper Lee and I think she's Chinese American. It's kind of similar to American Dragon, no Asian writers or directors. I like the art design more than American Dragon. I don't think they show her parents. She's got an older grandparent mentor, like AD, secret magical powers, fights monsters, yada yada typical Saturday morning junk. A younger annoying sibling, a talking dog, bleh.

Judd Winick, who created Juniper Lee, also writes for a lot of DC comics. He was also on the Real World and married the Chinese girl that was on the season he was. Pam, I think. According to his interview, Juniper Lee is based on his wife.

Just what we need, a new stereotype of representation of Asian children and sage like grandparents, while conveniently ignoring Asian of reproduction / work ages, say ... 18-49 (or so).

Re: Jake Long - hapa cartoon character?
Jake Long also plays in Taiwan. A couple of the younger kids come home everyday from school to tune into it. I'm not sure how they handle his ethnicity. They might not address a mixed heritage for the character.
