WebTrends is a scary tool.

It will even attempt to capture the URL for a PM, if the PM has the appropriate link to a certain web page that is being monitored by WebTrends.

You can see what web pages are getting hit. Where the referrals are coming from. What sort of search terms were used to get to your web site.

Most webmasters who have access to their server logs have this capability already, albeit in raw data. I monitor Yellowworld's logs from time to time for traffic and occassionally for security reasons. The logs basically show users as IP addresses: where the IP address is coming from, what parts of the site are accessed, for how long, and then what sites they're going to.

I would imagine that most sites generating thousands of hits on a daily basis that don't have an interactive community, such as our forums here, would depend quite heavily on tools such as WebTrends due to the number of new site visitors.

Then again, I'm not a big fan of sites that utilize cookies for marketing purposes. I'm not sure why WebTrends uses cookies in lieu of having clients upload their server data.

This is true but it's not like the PM id number carries any identifiable characteristics. All WebTrends, or a web server for that matter, will see is the url:

Based on that, you can't determine who sent it, to whom or even when it was sent. You can guess though that YW users use a lotta PM's:)
