Dreamworks snatches up Typhoon, aka "the most expensive Korean film ever"

Typhoon Blows to DreamWorks
Source: Variety
December 21, 2005

DreamWorks Pictures will release Typhoon, the most expensive Korean film ever made, in North America next year, reports Variety.

The studio has pacted with South Korean major CJ Entertainment for the multilanguage film, directed by K.T. Kwak, about a modern-day pirate planning a massive attack on North and South Korea. The movie is the first Korean feature released by a U.S. major.

Shot on location in Thailand, Korea and Russia, Typhoon has earned a record 1.8 million admissions, totaling $11.1 million, in Korea over its first five days of release, despite a cool reception from local critics.

Typhoon has an officially stated budget of $15 million, but it is rumored to be several million dollars higher. It features local star Jang Dong-gun (The Promise).

CJ is a founding shareholder in DreamWorks and distributes the studio's films in Korea and selected Asian territories.

15 million dollars? Wouldn't that count as an independent film by Hollywood standards?

No kidding. The won must really be weak as water against the dollar if that's the barometer for "most expensive movie ever made" in Korea.

I thought "Taegukgi" was the most expensive? Or was that the one that raked in the most box office?
