My friend at BU campaigned against that Biolab.
Yay for APIAs in politics.

Re: Boston elects its first Asian-Am to city council - Boston Globe
I think he will make a fine addition to the city council even though he is one of several councilmen/women elected. I believe this is the first time in Boston's history that it has an Asian American representative even though Asians has been one of the fasting growing minority groups in Boston for the past few decades.
However I do not believe that he can stop the process of gentrification of many of Boston's Chinatown and other neighhorhoods. |

Re: Boston elects its first Asian-Am to city council - Boston Globe
Sam Yoon -- making waves.
Even though it is local politics stuff, Sam Yoon has chosen to be up front in some debates. And that's good, because it's easy for first time councilmembers to sort of ride the coat tails of the more experienced, and to fit in where the majority of council think is concerned. Yoon's move -- Staging a city-council demonstration was a good first move, but more will be required to reform Boston — and save lives First-term Boston city councilor Sam Yoon recently injected a double dose of confrontation and controversy into council proceedings when he helped stage-manage a demonstration by teenagers protesting Mayor Tom Menino’s $2.14 billion budget. Yoon hoped to add $5.1 million for additional youth programs and summer jobs. Not surprisingly, the effort failed when the council, by a vote of nine to four, approved Menino’s budget. Still, we think Yoon’s efforts were well worth the smoke they generated. Memorial complexities Marching into sensitive territory, a group of city councilors held a hearing yesterday on what to do about the memorials. Before the hearing, Yoon insisted he has no position, but noted there seems to be a growing feeling that there should be some thought about how the memorial issue should be handled. ``I think it erodes a community's sense of normalcy," he said. But on the other hand, he said, he understands the role of the memorials in helping survivors and others deal with sudden loss. Library would fill missing link to culture Fifty years ago, Chinatown's branch of the Boston Public Library at 130 Tyler St. was demolished to make way for a Central Artery ramp. Now, as new developments swirl around the neighborhood, residents say a library is needed to keep Chinatown's character alive. Spelling spats divide City Council -- One L or two for titles is debated But unfortunately, here's one stupid argument you'd wish a council wouldn't spend two minutes on. Casual observers might be forgiven if they don't immediately notice the difference. But among council members -- and staff throughout City Hall -- the question of one L or two is very serious . About half of the council's 13 members say the word should be spelled with two Ls, a British spelling that has been used in city documents for more than a century. Tradition dictates it, they say.
