Race and Ethnicity

Like others have pointed out that YW is a progressive forum and with that in mind I think we should be able to note the difference between race and ethnicity. Not only to discuss both, but honestly identify either as Asian American or Asian, can really highlight the types of views we bring to the table.

Also, I find that there is not only differences in how people perceive me as an Asian American, but I find Asian views different from those of an Asian American (a racial category). This self-identification using ambiguous ethnicities can't fully flesh out the dichotomy between the two and has often lead to ideological arguments on the roll of race and ethnicity.

With that in mind, I think that there should be a "race" category or at least a way to identify as say "Chinese American" not simply from our country as origin. And I feel that knowing that people identify this way, I can approach arguments with a better understanding.

Also, other aspects of our identity should be played out. Especially with gender (e.g. male, female, transgender) or even sexuality (LGBTIQQ, straight, non-sex) and maybe even religious beliefs. If we are talking about race on YW or at least hate crimes, I think it serves the development of YW to be able to see how all these identities intersect with that of being a racial minority and of a people of color.

Most things we can take care of. As rad pointed out, some things need his attention more directly and I don't think he's ignoring this thread as much as he's just busy. But I guess now SWK's going to email or IM him.

There wasn't much I could do about it, other then email him myself and I thought you'd be a better person to rep your request.

On a related note, why do we have to have ethnicity listed on our profile? Is it that essential to our dialogue? I think it's distracting and leads to a lot of racially charged insults and assumptions on the part of people who take the internet way too seriously.

i can see arguments for and against ethnicity, but i do feel that race (even if some ppl use it untruthfully) should be part of the profile.

maybe it should be:
asian or part asian
non-asian

I don't think it's essential -- what is essential to our dialogue, anyway? It's a tidbit of info, just like our age/gender/location.
