62nd Venice Film Festival
I was going to check some mail on yahoo when this caught my eye:
http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/news/va/2...542416300.html I read the article titled "Venice prepares for film fest with Asian flavour" and the only reference to Asian is with the basic representation of martial arts. There's also mention of featured Asian actors and a showcase of 40's Chinese classics; whatever those might be.

Re: 62nd Venice Film Festival
Did you bother to actually take a look at the festival programme itself, rather then rely on the brief news article and making a rather lame ass comment based on that?
http://www.labiennale.org/en/cinema/exhibition/program/ from the programme: The Secret History of Asian Cinema A retrospective section on Japanese film 1926 to 1978 Chokon ( 1926) by Daisuke Ito Chuji tabi nikki ( 1927) by Daisuke Ito Oatsurae Jirokichi koshi ( 1931) by Daisuke Ito Tange Sazen yowa – Hyakuman ryo no tsubo ( 1935) by Sadao Yamanaka Kouchiyama Soshun ( 1936) by Sadao Yamanaka. Re: 62nd Venice Film Festival
Suzuki is probably the only name I recognize off of the Japanese list. Nice, I liked the film I saw from him, but the name escapes me.

Btw, the Venice FF I think is one of the oldest around and like Cannes is an important event for the international film community. Wish I could be there. |

Re: 62nd Venice Film Festival
So, will this sway Hollywood's ideas on actually incorporating Asians and Asian Americans into films or is this more along the lines of "We like Asian films, we like Asian food, we like Asian spirituality. We just don't like Asians."

Re: 62nd Venice Film Festival
Awards announced. Of the three we got:
Prize for New Trends: Park Chan-wook's Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, "for having treated successfully the delicate subject of vengeance with class in a sophisticated and epic way. This is the form that the modern Korean cinema imposes as the new cinematographic trend for the future." Hayao Miyazaki received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in a special ceremony at the Sala Grande this afternoon. In a completely packed theater, the animation master was cheered and applauded for a good ten minutes, and then took the time when he took his seat for the screening of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind to thank everyone seated in the room, bowing to all sections. What a fantastic director - and moving ceremony. Miyasaki hopes to take a walk around Venice before going home to continue working on three films. |

Re: 62nd Venice Film Festival
sweet.
now i have to ask. What's a Golden Lion? Is that a "film festival- wide" award or is that specifically only for this festival. Or is it the equivalent of a SAG award?
