Soldier survives attack; captures, medically treats sniper (Video)

Pfc. Stephen Tschiderer is a native of Mendon, N.Y. —
During a routine patrol in Baghdad June 2, Army Pfc. Stephen Tschiderer, a medic, was shot in the chest by an enemy sniper, hiding in a van just 75 yards away. The incident was filmed by the insurgents.

I was kinda wondering why he didn't try aiming for a more unprotected spot, but then I realized that I play too much BF2/CS.

"Sniper" is used generally as anyone sniping and not really how we define sniper in the USMC or something. The insurgent was probably using some smaller calibre rifle since it seems like they usually don't have real good weaponry.
A sniper rifle like the ones used by the USMC would kill anybody with a shot to the chest regardless of body armor, similar to a Remington model 700 or a 300 Winmag.

I'm surprised that guy isn't dead. My only thought is that perhaps it wasn't a direct hit on his center of mass, but was perhaps deflected by the body armor.

No... I highly doubt the insurgent was using that rifle. Body armor wouldn't save him against that. Body armor is mainly intended to protect against shrapnel from explosions. Most body armor won't even save you from large handguns. I think the best types can protect against something as large as a .357 magnum.
The insurgent was probably using something like an SKS or whatever because those weapons are generally cheap and reliable although not very accurate.

Yes and they easily penetrate body armor. I won't say it's useless because it can protect against a lot of things, but they would rarely save you from gunfire without protective plates inserted. I have a vest but no plates.. although wearing one in a civilian situation is quite different.
