Supporting APA Actors/Artists

http://forums.yellowworld.org/showth...969#post395969 - i voted for John Cho.

is it true that money talks and will we really see a difference is we demonstrate a greater support for our APA artists and actors? would we alone be sufficient to consitute a market? what would we need to do? would you do it? if it means not only supporting a movie and watching it but also buying tickets for four subsequent weeks even if you would not be able to go, would you do it?

yes, i think money talks. but as far as the movie industry is concerned, i'm not sure if we have enough to propel any Asian American actors to mainstream fame. we are still such a small percentage of the American population.

my gf took a film class and the professor noted that 1/2 of all moviegoers are African American and the professor goes further to say that because they come in and represent films usually will have an African American portrayal in it. in other news, Samuel Jackson dies in 90% of the films he stars in.

half of all movie goers are African American? but the African American population is only about 10% of the entire American population. that would have to mean that black people are about... 4 or 5 times more likely (did i do my math right?) to go watch movies than people who are not black...

Well, it was noted by the professor, I'm not sure where she/he got her statistics from, but if you watch a lot of US movies there is A LOT of representations of African Americans than there is of others. That or the statement by the professor made me biased to note more African Americans in movies.

i think that's probably because blacks are accepted as "americans", unless it's a black person from africa.

where as asians automatically we be assumed to be a "foreigner", and relegated to the foreign tourist/massage parlor roles.

You must have those numbers mixed up, or maybe your friend did. There's no way on earth that 50% of all theater patrons are Black; for one thing, Blacks aren't distributed equally around the US, they're mostly concentrated in cities. That means that every $10-a-ticket, 3-screen theater in NYC has to have enough Black butts in the seat to offset all the 20-screen multiplexes scattered throughout suburban America. For another, Hollywood is all about making money - films with Black leads have a built-in audience, and if that audience made up half of all ticket sales you better believe we'd see a whole lot more of the Wayans brothers.

Again, let me add, that I heard it from the grapevine, but if it's anywhere near true, it COULD explain why there are more African American characters in movies. I'm not going to sit around and gripe about statistics, I'll get back to you on the source, but try to argue that you don't see as many African Americans on the screen, you can't.

A new national survey of nearly 2,000 African American inner city youth examines the latest media consumption trends and provides marketplace insights into the most influential and trendsetting youth market in the world. The poll, conducted in nine U.S. cities between April 15 and August 15, 2002, uncovers trends associated with media consumption behaviors and choices; movie, radio, television and Internet preferences; and “Who’s Hot” among a wide range of actors, actresses, hip-hop celebrities, R&B stars, sports figures and comedians. The study also analyzes the general lifestyle markers of inner city youth as they navigate through the days and hours of their typical week, giving advertisers a road map of when and where to place their advertising.

The consumer marketing intelligence generated by this study allows ethnic marketers a window into the lives of this hard-to-reach market and provides the framework for the creation of marketing and advertising initiatives that are culturally-relevant and precise and create consumer buying decisions that positively resonate far after an advertising campaign is complete.

The Motion Picture Assn. of America said that in 1998, 71% of all movie admissions were white, 11% black and 11% Hispanic; all others accounted for 7%. In 1999, the fastest-growing group was Hispanic, which saw its moviegoer percentage climb to 15%.
Hmm, let me delve into this further, but notice no APIAs.

Re: Supporting APA Actors/Artists

But is everything that an Asian American actor does support-worthy? Should Asian Americans have flocked to see Rising Sun just because some Asian American actors were in it?

I think that's the question of the day. Are all MSM APIA works supportable, or are none supportable because they run the risk of furthering stereotypes. Unfortunately, it's got to be by a case-by-case basis now days.
