Re: Year of the Yao
The Yao-ster and Van Gundy!
Like what Van Gundy did in sticking up for Yao. Just par for the course, though? http://www.cleveland.com/sports/plai...7767141810.xml Tuesday, May 03, 2005 From wire reports The NBA fined Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy $100,000 - the largest amount ever for a coach - on Monday, a day after accusing officials of targeting center Yao Ming this postseason and saying Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is to blame. While Van Gundy laughed off the penalty and Yao offered to pick up half the tab, the matter jumped to another, far more serious level. Commissioner David Stern called the fine "an intermediary step," adding that an investigation will continue once the Rockets finish their playoff run. He said further punishment is possible, even implying that Van Gundy could face a lifetime ban. "If he's going to say things like that, he's not going to continue in this league," Stern said. "If the attitude reflected in those comments continues to be public, he's going to have a big problem with me as long as I'm commissioner."

Re: Year of the Yao
Why are the consequences for something like this so big? I thought people in the NBA, whether it be players, coaches, or owners, talked shit and accused each other (or the referees) on a daily basis.

Re: Year of the Yao
Stern's main concern is the ref who talked to Van Gundy. The appearance of favortism by refs (even moreso than presently) can't be good the the league's image. He's bringing the hammer down on Van Gundy to try to get him to turn on the ref.
I think Stern's doing this the wrong way and Van Gundy might be making the ref part up altogether, but whatever. Stern's led the NBA to success for over 20 years. He can do whatever he wants in the best interests of the league as long as he's not oversteping his authority as defined in the CBA and the by-laws. So has anyone actually seen "The Year of the Yao" ?

The words here in H-town is that Jeff doesn't really have any problem with calls being made on moving picks as long as the refs are consistent with it. He has a fit with Yao getting foul calls when other who do the same thing get away with it. The thing about Yao not getting a call has been going on for the whole season. BTW, the refs are just horrendous in the Rockets-Mavs series.

Re: Year of the Yao
Yao Ming's a tremendous asset for the post-Jordan NBA, as he is incredibly and uniquely talented, fan-friendly, clean-cut, and sharp witted. He has to improve his stamina though.
