Anyone know if he is part Asian? Isn't the name Tong Chinese?



Very popular in the UK and regarded for his skill, he is.

Saw his name mentioned along side DJ Aldrin as a top DJ in the UK.

So much so, that his name is the subject of a movie title:
It's All Gone Pete Tong

The phrase "it's all gone Pete Tong (imdb link)" is a slang term in the Cockney rhyming style that translates as "it's all gone wrong," it’s not actually a diss against DJ Pete Tong, though he inspired the expression. Tong also drops by as himself in this spoof on club culture, directed by Michael Dowse as a follow-up to his cult hit FUBAR.

I saw an interview of him way back. He might be chinese, like his eyes look sort of that way, but i cant be certain. But "Tong"? maybe he is..

Anyway he is THE promoter/pioneer of underground dance/electronic music in Britain in my book. Like he was there in person, way back in the mid 80s, getting all the original 1st generation of Acid House, Chicago House from America, and gettting all the original first generation American House DJs over to England to play in the clubs. While the British were enjoying and dancing to the latest electronic sound by American DJs, most American people ignored them and didnt know about it. To this day many Americans think House, Techno Dance music came from Europe. It didnt. It came from America. But thanks to Pete Tong its been bigger in Europe and Japan ever since.

But then again Lee is a common name for non-Asians, too, right?

I don't think I know of any non-Asians whose last name is Tong.

I saw a non-Asian with the surname Tong. I thought she was Scandinavian or something, but she may have been English or Irish because it's a name found in both places.

I heard of this guy, I wondering the same thing. He doesn't look Hapa. For all we know, though, his last name isn't really Tong. You know how celebrities like to change their name. I say it's a marketing gimic.

After second thought, I tend to think he is not Asian either.

And as nonamerasian points out the name Tong is not necessarily exclusively Asian. In my own research, I discovered that there is a Tong region in the UK.

I think that if he were hapa, it would have been more common knowledge.

Well being one of the founding people to help change the society of clubbing and dance music of the early 90s, he better damn should be a great DJ.

Last I heard from his work, he did a 4 hour set in one special New Years Eve party for £30,000 (approximately $56,000 USD) - that tells you how great of a DJ he is.

That isn't weird at all.

The epicanthic fold isn't an exclusively East Asian feature.

There are tribes around Africa where the feature is common or even prominent like the Hamar (?) and Khoisan.

It's not uncommon in my family.
