Martial arts and weapons

How many asians in here regularly study/practice/researchadore the different martial arts and associated weapons and techniques? The Western approach of firearms has its place, but I was wondering if all different generation of Asians eventually associate themselves with a cultural affinity towards martial arts as a form of exercise, self-defense, or physical development form.

Dude the Finger of Death is not Shaolin, it is Wah Shan (Yat Yung Gie!)...JK

We have to match up your finger to my authentic Shaolin 'Flowing Cloud Flying Sleeve!'

Re: Martial arts and weapons

All the martial arts I've studied in the past (taekwondo, kung fu, aikido, modern wushu, small amount of karate) have been all had a fundamentally open-hand base. There were some weapons forms and movements with the staff, chain whip, and 3-section that I learned when I was training in Shaolin kung fu but they were supplementary and not necessarily core to the art such as the styles of escrima/arnis, kendo, iaido, or whatever. Now when I train I usually incorporate just like...modern kickboxing techniques with some traditional muay thai ones, but I didn't really have any formal training in that. I think the martial arts stereotype is pretty much the only thing I can claim in terms of how other people categorize Asians, since I'm not a hard worker, not short, don't have slanty eyes, and I'm not academically proficient. Oh wait, I'm pretty passive. Never mind.

Re: Martial arts and weapons

I studied kendou and iaidou. Kendou is a cool martial art. Although practicing in mid-summer in that gear is like heat, sweat and suffocation. And in winters being bearfoot on the floor feel likes daggers. Though once you get into it you forget your suffering, and go with the flow of the experience. The best part was we helped each other out during practices, improving together with your friends. At first theres alot of torso and neck bruises and torn-off foot-skin, some blood. No kidding. But as you get better you know what to do, so. Did iaidou too. They say while kendou is the hard half, iaidou is the other, soft half. It was ok. Sometimes got too Zenny for me though

I use swords in wushu. Weapons in wushu are considered more advanced and become more important than a lot of non-weapon forms. I find that the moves are a lot harder in weapon styles.
