comic book
Do comic books still follow the same formula or have they evolved into something more? Are they a literary genre or a cartoon diversion? Opinions anyone?

Re: comic book
well, with books like maus, you sort of get the feeling that they're slowly living up more to the "graphic novel" moniker. at some point, the visual element isn't necessarily the dominating part of the book, it just helps deliver the message. but then, this is coming from a person who thinks manga (good manga, mind you) should be considered literature...

Re: comic book
I haven't picked up comics in a while, but they *seem* to be better now then in the mid 90's. I swear, every comic back then was basically a front for cheesecake/quasi legal porn for 13 year olds with skimpily clad super heroines on every cover.
Unless of course I'm just wrong and comics are still all about boobs :P |

Re: comic book
they're getting more long drawn out story arc-ish. more crossover, more focus on continuum. definitely more social commentary stuff... i think they're getting smarter and less just for kids, although this is hurting the market somewhat.

Re: comic book
Depends...they still have comics geared towards the young ones, like Scooby Doo, Walt Disney, and some teen superhero ones, but the majority are for the more mature audience. Back in the'30's they were basically fantasy for little boys, such as...
But around the mid '80's and 1990's, they became a little more...adult.... ![]()

QUOTE:
Didn't realize all the political stuff behind them. The Green Arrow was made more of a liberal character to boost his bland image. I like how stylized the comics have gotten in these "graphic novels". I like the one book dealies, over the series you have to pickup to get the whole story. Interesting how many times Superman and Batman had been done over.
