Most people I know are on AIM or MSN, but since I don't use MSN, AIM wins by default.
I've never had any problems with ICQ, but very few people use it. I kinda like YIM better than AIM, but more people are on AIM.

I don't know enough people on AIM to warrant installing it. I use MSN and ICQ for work related stuff and the occasional "Let's go to this place with so-and-so" message to friends.

AIM because almost everyone I know uses it. I also like the smileys better (when they are small).
I don't like the spyware that comes with it, or the pop up ads, but there is software to remove that crap. it all comes down to what your friends use, i'd probably be using smoke signals if there were no other options...

Trillian...use it mostly for AIM but I have friends on ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo as well.

MSN, if only more of my friends used it.
Trillian (at least the version that I have) is nice cuz it saves space on my screen, but it has such limited capabilities. with that said, i use Trillian most often.
