You don't get to pull any stunts like that 'til they call you in for a panel (where they do actual voir dire, a.k.a. juror selection).

I have jury duty in late October. I can't wait. Anything to get me out of the office...

Dude, I'd just sleep! During my summer after first year in law school, I was a clerk with the public defender's office. I sat in on this quadruple homicide case (some guy came in to rob a car wash that was a front for drug dealers). As interesting as it was (some parts) the bailiffs would always clown me 'cause I couldn't stay awake for the life of me.

Shoot, i've never never never been called to do jury duty... its something that i've always been interested in wanting to be a part of... you know being a part of something... deciding if the person is guilty or not guilty... it all seems kinda exciting to me...

is it really that boring?? i guess i need to actually experience the process of it all.. to really understand where you people are coming from....

no way. after 9/11, i don't even think non-attorneys/judges/staff can bring their cell phones. or at least in the federal district.

I wouldn't mind it. It wouldn't be a substantial financial hardship for me. Sure, I might be bored silly but you know, how the hell else is the justice system going to work without people serving as jurists?

I'm not excited about doing it but I wouldn't ditch it unless I had a really good reason like family illness or financial hardship. Or some crazy motherfucker on trial who will burn my visage into his retinas in order to track me down and kill me in ritual sacrifice.

bluecollarjap is on a distinguished road.
yeah jury duty sucks. i served a six week fed term. i had just returned from my first 2 week vacation from my new job and got nailed with this trial that went for six weeks strait. damn near lost my job and my newly purchased condo. i know its a rosponsiblity for all US citizens but the system has to have safeguards for those who serve. the law states that the employer has to give time off but doesn't say anything about paid time off. for a fed trial its only 40 bucks a day, thats parking for the day in the city of chicago, (they don't even provide free parking). plus, how is 40 bucks a day going to pay the mortgage. anyone in a trades position will tell you the difficulty in holding a job when your away for an extended amount of time. no matter what ceritification you hold, someone can be found to replace you in a heartbeat. so, i am willing to serve, but i need a guarantee that i keep my same level of income and can return to a job. my legal rant!
