Angry Dealing with your boss' disorganization

For the second time this month, I got assigned an "urgent" piece of work which is fast approaching a deadline. Usually it's not something directly related to the core of our project, but a piece of side work that could be very useful and speed things up significantly.

Then, about 6 hours after I finish it, turns out to have already been assigned to someone in another team (at another location) already two weeks ago, and of course with two weeks rather than 2 days to finish it, they've done a very nice, fully documented job with all sorts of bells and whistles, making my work completely obselete.

How do I deal with the fact that my manager has no idea what other teams are doing, and the other teams don't do any effort at making widely known outside their own office all the side projects they're working on?
