LAFAYETTE, La. - Men ranging in age from 22 to 72 were arrested during a two-day sting at a public park restroom after complaints of lewd behavior there.

Nine men were arrested on obscenity counts for allegedly being caught engaged in oral sex acts, while a 72-year-old from Arnaudville was arrested on a count of sexual battery for allegedly grabbing at an undercover officer's genitals, said Cpl. Mark Francis, a Lafayette police spokesman.

"It's summertime and there's kids and families in the parks and that's the kind of stuff that's going on out there," Francis said. "You have these men, adult men, who are using public restrooms to engage in oral sex ... Surprisingly, a lot of the folks are married."

The sting was simple. Officers watched for two men entering the bathroom together, then waited a short time and followed them into the bathroom to see what was going on, Francis said.

He said city police do infrequent checks on areas such as the Beaver Park bathroom and conduct sting operations when enough public complaints are filed.

"We chase them around from park to park," Francis said.

That's so disgusting. So if you go to a public restroom now and smell some stank stuff, you know it has something to do with those extra curriculur activities. that's just nasty and wrong.

moving to GLBT forum. there was a case about 5 years ago re: a similar situation in northern california. i believe the police were found liable for wrongfully profiling the gay community and conducting illegal searches and seizures. i'll try to look the case up on tuesday. i wouldn't be surprised if the facts were skewed, there were not as many police complaints as they would like us to believe, and nobody's balls were ever grabbed.

i think the arrestees should speak to civil rights attorneys when they get the chance.

edit: just to clarify, i'm moving it to GLBT b/c i think this is an example of discrimination against the gay community & there seems to be trend of similar situations occuring throughout the nation in which police officers would abuse their power and conduct "sting operations" in public bathrooms. such articles also give off the impression that all gay men are perveted and enjoy lewd sex in the public.

^ i can't say that thought didn't cross my mind when i read this. but even if profiling happened, if the accused were caught "in the act" then wouldn't that pretty much be an open and shut case?

but i still find the situation funny... pretty juvenile huh?
