working on research of media impact in asia

Hey guys, I'm working on a research for my Research Methodology class, and I'm trying to measure the impact of media and advertisements in Asia, more specifically Korea. Anyone knows any resources in english that I can use? Everything I've been finding is in Korean which is taking me forever to read and interpret.

I'd also like to hear your opinion and what you think would be some possible consequences on this issue.

For example, right now Hyundai Department Store has all ads with caucasian models, and only one add featuring a Korean singer with 2 caucasian kids. What do you think will be the possible consequences in self image among korean youngsters

Hey, how are your classes going ? For some reason I just assumed that you weren't starting until the Fall.

I guess you've already heard my opinion on the issue.

I posted a somewhat related topic/article (Tyranny of the Brand) a while back, that has so far gotten over 40 views but no input/feedback from this board :

Classes are going ok, I've been pretty busy with them so that's why I hadn't been able to come to the forum for a while. I'm mostly taking management and finance classes, and this research class. And I thought this was quite an interesting phenomenon going on here.

thanks for pointing yoru link

It seems that it's both. On one hand people seem to be pretty nationalistic and patriotic, but at the same time there's been some really extreme changes after the financial crisis of 97. Korea right now is trying to become a financial hub for north east asia, so there's been huge efforts to make Korea a more international country, which means using more foreign models, showing foreign films, etc. The thing is that it's being done extremely fast that I don't think people have stop to think about the impact on culture, image, and identity.

Re: working on research of media impact in asia

Something the 1.5ers might remember: Ya know, there was something I had way in the back of my head that I had forgotten about and remembered only when I started going back to Thailand. And that was when they take pictures, they don't say "cheese," they say "Pepsi." And then I remembered a Pepsi advertising campaign during the 70s that basically had people doing that -- posing for pictures and saying "Pepsi." This phenomena might have been local to Thailand, or at least my little rural part of it, but I doubt it. Anybody else remember that?

Oh, years ago when I lived overseas there were a lot of white models in advertising in S. Korea and Okinawa. Of course, back then I didn't pay any attention. Poo, knowing what I know now I would have asked my white classmates about the process and their thoughts. Edit: White classmates that were after school models.

For possible consequences, the first thing that comes to my mind as far as South Korea goes, is plastic surgery to gain European features.

I just found out from some other research. That's been pretty much the consequence; thinner nose, double eyelids, sharper chin, wider forehead, etc..

Re: working on research of media impact in asia

What about issues like an ethnic Korean person in Korea with Korean language skills graduating from a top Australian school losing out in a job race ? With deference going to a white graduate of the Australian equivalent of University of Phoenix who doesn't know any Korean at all.
