I was reading the local paper yesterday and they had this section about some consultant that the Big 3 call in when they're putting on the finishing touches of a car. This consultant's job was to create an positive psychological image in the minds of consumers, irrespective of fuction. For example, with SUVs consulant advises to make bigger, taller SUVs because psychologically, people feel safer in them even though he acknowledges that makes them prone to rollover. The worst example was with the PT Cruiser - focus groups didn't like how people could peer into the overly large rear window, so he had them reduce the size of the window that, "reduces safety (you can't see as well) but makes people feel more secure inside the car." Make the idiots feel like they're the kings of the road - is it any wonder there are so many stupid drivers out there today?
