Stupid earwigs in my mailbox

for the past like week every day when i check the mail theres multiple earwigs crawling around in there.

anyway yeah they're harmless but they annoy the shyte out of me. my best guess for how they get in there is a gap in the nails/holes at the bottom of my mailbox

any household items i can use to ensure they dont come back?

I read somewhere that you can collect earwigs in your garden by rolling up damp newspapers and placing them overnight. I guess they like dark, damp, papery-stuff? I'll bet that the mailbox is wet or something, and that makes it attractive to them.
