The Saab 9-3 narrowly squeezed out the WRX for me on my last car purchase. I like the look of the car and the features, but they weren't offering a luxury interior. I heard that Subaru was also going to make changes to the WRX, and si model was supposed to be offered. What's the difference going to be? I'll probably be buying another car in 2003 or 2004.

Suburu will come out with the STi model, not SI

The difference is everything, if you think the current WRX is an awesome ride, the STi is a road BEAST. If you want comfort and luxury, don't get this car, better to just get a Lexo/bimmer/benzie.

Oops. :o

No leather seats or better interior? That's a drag. Getting back to the power issue - is the performance supposed to get even better/more powerful?

performance, yes! can u compare a 220hp motor to a rally racing inspired 260hp engine? no i don't think so :P

It's a sports/rally car so of course no leather! The subaru is all about power and it's AWD award winning rally champion.

actually mitsubishi beat them for last few years in WRC.

227hp and 260 its about the same, u can make the normal WRX get to 260hp by raising boost and supplying more fuel. The main difference between the 2 models is the STI has better shocks and springs, better interior, Projector/HID lamp option (japan), 6 speed manual, and revisted limited slip differentials(Sti adds a front LSD), and larger brembo calipers and rotors. It offsets the extra 30 or so hp w/ its weight and the added friction of the front limited slip and the more aggressive rear Limited slip diff.

Probably the Lancer EVO will be a better buy and be more powerful when it reachs america. New STi pricing is almost 10k over the base american WRX. it prices out around 3.6million yen (33.5-34,000 US$). The sub 30k Lancer EVO (which is a lancer 8 or lancer 7 derrivative for usa market and is detuned) whould have about the same hp as the subaru wrx Sti euro whch is most likely our model of the Sti, not the japanese 276hp STi version.

WRX is a buffed up economy car, same w/ the lancer. no luxury. just good performance and gawdy loooks.

Not to say i dont like them, my brother would like to purchase an STi eventually (next yr). And i would like to purchase a lancer summer of next year also to complement my current turbo car =X

also the 227bhp and 262bhp/ 276ps WRX motor are similar the main difference is the USDM ej20 is a open deck block design which basically means it cant rev as high. the JDM ej20 from the STI is a closed deck (denoted by red intake runners) design and can rev to 7900rpm versus 7000rpm. The other big difference is the intercooler size and turbo choice. The USDM wrx uses a dinky Mitsubishi TD-04 turbine and i think a 14g compressor wheel. Very small turbocharger that is similar to the Td04-16g from 90-94 eclipse GSt/GSX automatic transmission cars. The WRX STi uses a larger turbine and compressor wheel.

is it me or kinda ironic WRX uses a mitsubishi turbo while the mitsubishi lancer EV0 7 uses a garret titanium material turbocharger. the reason being is response the WRX always in any form has alota turbo lag an no power bellow 3000rpm

<img src='http://www.rsportscars.com/foto/10/impreza_sti_8.jpg[/img] closed deck high rev Ej20 turbo engine

also for wrx or wrx Sti pretty much the same u can modify ur normal WRX to be just as fast the JDM sti, just takes time and money.

WRX in general is pretty unrefined unsuiting for a 30 yr old married happa! =X

hows SAABs reliability my friend wants a 9-3?
