I play the violin and the viola, some cello, always wanted to play the bass. I used to play some piano, but I lost it a long long time ago. I'm planning on buying a guitar soon. I want electric but I think I should start out with acoustic. Not sure yet. A set of drums wouldn't hurt either, but hey, I'm not rich. If it counts, I'm good with vocals too. But nobody knows that and they never will, suckers.

I took piano lesson for 7-8 years. Played clarinet in school, for just 1.5 years, and violin for a few months. Participated in various choir groups from grades 7-10. Last 2 years in choir were my fave. I wish I'd stayed in band. ;(

i played the violin for years and years and then quit in hs.
however 2 months ago in an attempt to re-culturalize myself i went and rented a violin. guess where i'll be going sometime this week? yes, to return it. *sigh* just can't get into it anymore and the inner debate whether to trim my nails so that i could actually play without snagging all the strings decided the issue for me. =( |

I used to play the glockenschpiel in grade school. Other than that, I play with my voice, but that doesn't count I suppose. I love to sing.

I took two years of piano lessons in elementary school. About all I remember how to do is the right hand portion to "E.T." In the fifth grade, I kinda learned a bit of the violin in school just so I could leave the classroom every once and a while. I faked every "concert." It was great. I do like sounding out songs and stuff on the piano though. I wish I knew how to do those "fake" chords. Then I could pretend to have skills. And yes, I like to sing after a night of drinking. Even though I assume that I pretty much suck.

MAAAN- Who cares what is "cool" in middle/high school. It's such BS. Who the hell wouldn't want to make music with their peers? It's one of the greatest things in the whole world. At the beginning of the school year everyone is a little timid because they're not comfortable around everyone else, but slowly you get used to it. You're part of the family. My last year in choir, I was in a Woman's choir group. All girls. So there were sometimes 3 or 4 sections: Alto I, Alto II, Soprano I and Soprano II. Through time, you come to realize that without your section's input, the piece doesn't sound as nice. Even though you don't have the melody, or the best part, you are needed. You work hard together, trying to make the piece work, practicing certain passages over and over, until it's perfect. And, when it's finally concert time, you recognize that all of the hard work paid off, because your group sounded awesome, you get a standing ovation, and people you don't know compliment your performance. In music, just like sports teams, everyone relies on eachother. It's like a family. Just because of one class, you form bonds with others you would probably never have spoken to or associated with, had you not taken part in the musical group/team.
I would pick a musical group over a sports team any day, though. You know why? In music, you're more so a part of the group. In sports teams, someone can replace you, you may not play as much as you'd like, etc. It comes more down to your ability. Okay, same with music, but check this: In orchestra, you're not the greatest violinist. But you try hard. Even though you're not first or second chair, you get to play third chair. You're still part of the group. You participate in every activity the second or first chairs partake in because you are a group, whereas in basketball, it's usually the stars who shine most. If you're not as good as them, you have to wait until the team has a big enough lead that the coach is confident his team will win, or until the star is tired or hurt. I'm not talking a few minutes playing time here, I'm talking real playing time. Yeah, but either way.. you get the bond with other people. I guess that's what counts most. |
