Dark Tower Series - Stephen King

Anyone down with this series? It's the only books I look forward to. So installment #5 is out now on hardcover. I'm gonna pick up my copy this weekend. Anyone else lookin forward to it?

I read the first three. Many a summer vacation was spent with my nose in a King novel. The Dark Tower series is his best IMO. It's been so long since I first read it I'll have to re-read. Oh well, should be more enjoyable this time around since I'll be reading it with an adult mind rather than gradeschool or junior high.

is it like pure fantasy or is there like horror elements in it? like "the masked rider carried his sword and came across a disembowled man hanging from a pole with a sign stuffed in his mouth 'stay away ye!' "

It's mostly fantasy. There's no way that I can explain it to you. You're really gonna have to read it yourself to get an understanding of the story. But, a quick summary is that the main character is a "Gunslinger", the last of his kind who is trying to stop the destruction of his "world", and the "Dark Tower" has something to do with it's erosion. The Gunslinger is kinda like a billy-bad-ass Jedi who uses sandalwood grip guns instead of a lightsaber.

Sidenote: Most King stories have a connection to the Dark Tower.

it's like, horror, fantasy, a western, with elements of tolkein (sp?). i read it like 5 years ago, and it's been a long time since i've read it. it was kind of hard to understand the first time i read the books and i've been meaning to read this series again. i want to read 'the wolves of calla', please post what you think of the book?

heh, maybe im just oldschool but when you say he's sick (or when anyone uses the word for that matter) it makes it sound like "damn king is one depraved f--k"

You probably had the understanding issue with book 1, "The Last Gunslinger". If that's the case, then I understand. I was about to chunk it, until I got to the second book and realized what King was trying to do. Roland (the gunslinger) lives in a paralell world with ours and though some things may be quite similar, their thought process and speech are archaic and strange to us. So, in book 1, the entire story was based in Rolands world/time and the writing reflected as such. That's why it was so hard to understand.

First book was the slowest. Only cuz u had no idea what was going on.

it's tough to categorize, but it's definitely fantasy. not so much D&D or horror ... but just weird shit w/ a Western feel to it.

the 2nd book is pretty funny (reading it now). now we know where being john malkovich stole the idea.

Man, after such a long time between Book 4 and 5. It's weird reading about them again. The book is still amazingly good. I guess I don't get to sleep on the train anymore. Roland is still the most bad ass character ever written ;).
