What does it take to be geeky?

There are some activities that get you labelled as a "geek". (Using Amietrons words) What if you already knew someone, and you didn't think he/she was a geek, but then several months later, found out he/she took part in some geeky activities? Would that change your view of them?

I remember when I was in high school. I joined this outside orchestra program. It was for kids that were pretty good I guess. So, you can imagine that a large majority of the kids were asian, and a large majority of the asians were kinda "geeky". There were 2 kids I hung out with, and they were considered non-geeky. So I guess the 3 of us in this orchestra were the "cool" kids. Ahahahaha. So I remember one day at a concert the "geeks" were sittin around playing Magic card games. So I just kinda sat down and watched and shit. I mean they looked like they were having fun and they were explaining the whole shit to me. So what'd I do? I went out and I bought a pack. Yeah....I owned a pack Magic cards. I'll admit it. In High School nonetheless. I didn't play that shit, I bought it in, and chatted with them, and was like oh shit, this thing stupid. And I stopped.

Soon as my 2 friends from there saw me with those kids tho(1 guy 1 girl), the guy pulls me aside and he's like yo, what're you doin. Stop playin that shit, you gonna bust out the pen and paper and start playing Dungeons and Dragons?

Damn, Orchestra and Magic cards in 1 story. I feel like a l00ser.

Re: What does it take to be geeky?

Magic trains your mind and your power to kick ass using powers of the other world. :D Yeah, I used to:

1. play card games (Hearts, Spades, but I never learned Bridge)
2. Magic
3. Write stories to myself on my shitty computer cuz it didn't have internet.
4. be on the debate team (but I sucked really bad)
5. have a token position in student gov't
6. walk against the walls
7. try to get my mack on w/ a geeky girl (but she rejected me.)
8. do my hw and let other ppl copy me
9. stand in line to buy school lunch instead of cut
10. get picked on by my peers

And I still watch cartoons. YEAH!

Re: What does it take to be geeky?

Guess I wasn't clear in my question. If you know some kid, and he's got stereotypically "non-geeky" qualities. Dresses well, in good shape, has a healthy social life. Then you find out he does something like Magic cards, Everquest, LAN parties or alot of other shit, would that change your perception of him? And if that type of thing matters to you, would you make fun of him for it?

17.75148% - Geek

Those were my results. Haha, but it's not fair to the people that work in the computer field. Especially in UNIX. All those computer questions were like yes, yes, yes, yes.

Re: What does it take to be geeky?

I think it does alter your perception -- if you know the guy well enough you can even joke with him about it. But if you're so preoccupied in being cool that you stop associating with the dude 'cuz you don't want 'geek cooties'... not a really good friendship to begin with.

There's nothing wrong with the student government, the debate team, and not cutting into line.
