Re: Corey Dillon is done
AFC Notebook: Corey Who?
by Rick Kamla - Senior Editor, Fanball.com Tuesday, November 11, 2003 Who needs Corey Dillon and his groin and his pouting when you have Rudi Johnson and his no-nonsense running? On the strength of 200 total yards and two scores from Johnson, the Bengals came from behind to beat the Texans 34-27. In doing so, they moved to 4-5 and just one game behind the AFC North leading Ravens. Almost more impressive than the fantasy stats were Johnson’s 43 carries, which beat the previous record (39) set by Dillon in 1997. His 182 rushing yards were the most by a Bengal since Dillon had 184 in 2001. “I just kept fighting,” Rudi told the Cincinnati Enquirer after the game. “The game is 60 minutes, however many carries it takes.” Right there in the foxhole with Johnson was an offensive line that kept driving the Texans off the ball all afternoon. “Rudi ran his heart out today,” said guard Mike Goff, who jumped into the crowd after one of Johnson’s scores. “He was a machine. It was beautiful to see him run that hard. You'd see the replay and you're like, Wow, he's really hitting the holes.” “Rudi has been hot," guard Eric Steinbach said. “When he gets it, he hits it hard and runs downhill. It's a lot of fun blocking for him.” It’s a lot of fun to have him in fantasy leagues as well. And to say Johnson has been hot is like saying Jessica Simpson has a decent body. In three starts this season, Johnson has 352 rushing yards (117.3 average), four touchdowns, and two 100-yard games. Johnson’s success has everybody, including yours freakly, wondering if/when Dillon is going to get his job back. Dillon was deactivated for Sunday’s game, but he was the only inactive player not at Paul Brown Stadium. “Sometimes guys ask for certain leeway, and I have to consider it,” said head coach Marvin Lewis, who appears to have given his superstar the day off. “I've got to be able to balance our football team and what is best for that player. At times, players come to me and have special requests. I have to weigh that. Corey has followed our plan.” The plan on Monday was for Dillon to come in and get treatment on the groin that has bothered him for weeks. “I wish people would get off Corey, and leave him alone,” Lewis continued. “Let him get well, and be our running back, and the guy that he is and be in his place on this team. “I want to get Corey back healthy as quick as we can. We've got guys that deal with different things. This is the first time he has been injured to this extent. A couple of other veteran players that we have on this team, their roles have changed. Sometimes, I can't just be a hard (guy) and say, 'This is the way it is,' because I lose them, and it's important that I don't lose them.” Don’t lose them? Is Lewis implying that if he rides Dillon he’ll lose control over him? It sounds to me as if he’s already lost control. And like it matters. You have a prima dona who won’t tote the rock unless he’s 100 percent and a hungry workhorse who just wants to win. I have defended Dillon in the past because I pitied his situation with the Bengals (and his “rather flip burgers” line was classic), but now the team is in contention and he’s not there physically—or mentally. It’s time for the Bengals to move on without their self-righteous superstar. It’s time for the Bengals to move forward with Johnson. And if you ask stud wideout Chad Johnson, it’s time for the Bengals to beat the undefeated Chiefs. “Some people may not like the guarantee,” Johnson said of his post-game proclamation, “but I know my teammates are not going to leave me hanging—they’re going to give 100 percent, and they know I'm going to give 100 percent. “This is how I feel about what we got going on right now, and how we've turned this organization around.” There’s no doubt about the fact that Lewis and friends have turned around the Bengals, but taking out the 9-0 Chiefs is going to take a perfect effort from an imperfect team. Just ask Jon Kitna, who has nine interceptions on the season. Just ask Peter Warrick, who hasn’t topped 100 yards since week two. Just ask Dillon, who might not even be at the stadium. “It should be the game of the week,” Johnson said of the Chiefs-Bengals clash. “You know, the undefeated Chiefs going against the new era of the Bengals, playing good football right now. They're only undefeated until they come in here next Sunday.” Johnson was right last season when he said his 0-7 Bengals would beat the 2-5 Texans, but this is not only another story, it’s another language. That said, if Rudi gets the rock, as I expect, the Bengals will at least prove Chad right for calling it “the game of the week.”

Re: Corey Dillon is done
Against the only undefeated team left in the NFL, Rudi ran for 164 yards in 22 carries, including a 54 yard run.
