Re: the perfect thai meal

OK, this is how I order Thai food for my non-Thai friends.

Starter: Sate w/ either chicken, beef, or pork which is Thai dish but can be found in Malaysian and Indonesian cusine. However, my favorite is Tod Mon (Thai fish cake).

Soup: Tom Kah Gai (chicken coconut soup), or Tom Yum, which is pretty much the same thing without coconut milk and galangar.

Salad: Beef Salad or go w/ Larb (spicy minced chicken, beef or pork), althouh I have to say that Thai people consider salad as main course.

Entree: Pud Kaprow (chicken, beef, or pork basil), Chicken Curry (red, yellow, or green -- pick your favorite color), Pad Thai (mainstay for beginners of Thai food),

Dessert: Sweet sticky rice w/ mango or egg custard w/ a scoop of coconut ice cream on the side, or just finish w/ a glass of Thai tea or Thai coffee.

And don't forget Som Tam, extra spicy, with sticky rice and fish sauce on the side.

Re: the perfect thai meal

What I noticed is that the best Thai food I've ever had was in Thailand wheras the best Vietnamese food I've ever had was in LA (and not Vietnam).

Wonder why...

well, only real thai restaurants
will have most of the stuff i listed,
none of that pansy thai fast food
places.

there's also so many sub-cusines
in thai cusine, north, northeastern,
southern, and central.

most restaurants in the us serve what
is called "royal thai cusine" which is
essentially central thai food.

the somtum that thaite was talking
about is northeastern, which is
traditionally eaten with sticky rice,
larb (spice salad) and namtok
(waterfall salad) is also from this region.

northern cusine also offers with
sticky rice, but you eat it with
honey roasted pork, namprik (chili dip)
and sai ouay (northern style spicy
sausage)

southern food is lots of vegetables,
and namely gaeng som (hot and sour
clear seafood soup). and ofcourse
kanom cheen nam ya (fat rice
noodles with fish curry sauce)

appetizer:
tod mun goong - shrimp cake
kratong tong - thai tacos (pattyshells with minced chicken)
mee krob - sweet fried rice noodles
pboo ja - deep fried stuffed crab shells
poh pia - spring rolls (make sure they're the traditional spring rolls, none of this eggroll malarky)

curry/soups:
gaeng phet ped yang - roast duck red curry
tom yum khon - hot and sour soup with lemongrass- order the khon one though, which means thick, because the clear one tastes like lemonade and chili.
gaeng kiew wan - green curry (and if they serve it with roti, then you're lucky!)
tom kha - coconut+galangal soup
poh taek - spicy seafood soup
panang - dry curry (yum)
mussaman - yellow curry with potatoes (so good)

in the middle:
gai phad med mamuang hin maparn - chicken and cashew nuts
yum neu - thai spicy beef salad
yum som-o - spicy pomelo salad
gai hor bai taey - chicken in pandan leaf
pboo phad pong karee - crab stir fried in yellow curry (super yum)
kai yang khao niew somtum - grilled chicken with sticky rice and papaya salad
kana moo krob - kale with crispy pork
chu chee goong - sauteed shrimp with chili
hor mok talay - steamed seafood curry custard
kai yad sai - stuffed omelets
pla samlee dad diew - fried fish with mango salad

noodles:
khao soi - northern style chicken noodle soup with crispy egg noodles
guay tiew kee mao - drunken noodles (rice noodles with basil - hot hot hot)
guay tiew neu subb - rice noodles with minced beef

dessert:
tub tim grob - red rubies (water chestnuts wrapped in tapioca served with coconut milk)
kluay buad chee - bananas in coconut milk
sankaya fuckthong - pumpkin custard (wintermelon is falled fuck in thai, pumpkins, fucktong)
bua loi - rice balls in coconut milk (my fave)
gluay tod - fried bananas
kao tom mudd - bananas in sticky rice

pick and choose

Re: the perfect thai meal

I don't know much about thai cuisine, except I like whatever they serve me.

Some of my favorites are Khao man gai (Thai version of arroz con pollo, or chicken and rice). Lard Na, thick rice noodles, kinda like chow fun, but with a thick yummy gravy. I also like Sticky rice and roasted chicken, Khao moo dang (rice and roast pork).

For dessert I really like lod chong, green sweet pasta in a coconut sauce. I like fried icecream that they seem to be serving at alot of the thai restaurants here, but I don't think it's really thai. Of course the thai iced tea is off the wall!

Re: the perfect thai meal

i so prefer tom kha kai to tom yum kai.

questions about the following - describe them & rate them if you can:

larb kai (chicken salad).

yum nua (beef salad).

yum ped yang (duck salad) (i've always wanted to try this, but non-chinese places always manage to ruin duck.)

plah goong (shrimp salad).

*i know all of the salads are not prepared in the same way, right?

Re: the perfect thai meal

Kinda the same way I think. I am not sure how duck salad is prepared but prolly similar. Larb kai is different. I think it has ground toasted rice called khao khuar and finely chopped galangar in addition to the usual ingredients.

Appetizer: Thai salad with the crunchy tofu and that curry sauce of the lettuce and carrots!
