Re: Your Career in Politics

October 2011 Movement

october2011.org

Could be a good place for an APIA Activist Caucus

Stop the Machine! Create a New World!

A Call to Action - Oct. 6, 2011 and onward

October 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of the 2012 federal austerity budget. It is time to light the spark that sets off a true democratic, nonviolent transition to a world in which people are freed to create just and sustainable solutions.

We call on people of conscience and courage—all who seek peace, economic justice, human rights and a healthy environment—to join together in Washington, D.C., beginning on Oct. 6, 2011, in nonviolent resistance similar to the Arab Spring and the Midwest awakening.

A concert, rally and protest will kick off a powerful and sustained nonviolent resistance to the corporate criminals that dominate our government.

Forty-seven years ago, Mario Savio, an activist student at Berkeley, said, "There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious—makes you so sick at heart—that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all."

Those words have an even greater urgency today. We face ongoing wars and massive socio-economic and environmental destruction perpetrated by a corporate empire which is oppressing, occupying and exploiting the world. We are on a fast track to making the planet unlivable while the middle class and poor people of our country are undergoing the most wrenching and profound economic crisis in 80 years.

"Stop the Machine! • Create a New World!" is a clarion call for all who are deeply concerned with injustice, militarism and environmental destruction to join in ending concentrated corporate power and taking direct control of a real participatory democracy. We will encourage a culture of resistance—using music, art, theater and direct nonviolent action—to take control of our country and our lives. It is about courageously resisting and stopping the corporate state from destroying not only our inherent rights and freedoms, but also our children’s chance to live, breathe clean air, drink pure water, grow edible natural food and live in peace.

As Mother Jones said, "Someday the workers will take possession of your city hall, and when we do, no child will be sacrificed on the altar of profit!"

We are the ones who can create a new and just world. Our issues are connected. We are connected. Join us in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 6, 2011, to Stop the Machine.

Re: Your Career in Politics

Honestly, I am not into politics, I never dream to be in politics, though having a career there is good and you can help people. But never in my mind that I will be in Politics someday :)

Red face Re: Your Career in Politics

A person who has a career in politics gets a paycheck from it.

This happens by:

1) Getting get a paycheck by working for someone whose willing to pay you
2) People send you money and fund your account.

The first way means you are working for an existing person or agency already established in politics. The second way means you are working for yourself because you are either

a) a politician in office, e.g. Obama
b) a political candidate, e.g. Ron Paul
b) a registered political party, e.g. The Republican Party
c) an advocacy group, e.g. The AFL-CIO, PETA,
American Bankers Association

A person who fit the second category must be a excellent speaker and communicator - that is that person must have acting skills. Everything else can be farmed out - which is where the person who fits the first category falls into. These include but are not limited to the following:

1) political analyst/ strategist
2) public relations specialist/spokes persons
e.g. speech coach, speech writer
3) telemarketing workers, survey/poll takers
4) logistic/travel support
5) media specialist/contractors, e.g.
direct mail, website design, printing, tv/radio workers
6) caterers
7) accountant/treasurer
8) office workers

The most significant challenge to go the second way
is that you'll need to have certain resources to carry it off:

1) mailing list of
a) registered voters who support you OR
b) paying association members

2) phone/twitter list of
a) registered voters who support you OR
b) paying association members

3) email list of
a) registered voters who support you OR
b) paying association members

4) License/registration that list you/ your group
so it can raise money. Associations and political candidate
must have item 1).

5) Money. An association, lobbyist group, political party, and
an politician in office normally already has money.

Re: Your Career in Politics

The key to becoming an effective politician is to look at the Big Tangible Picture (BTP) and see how one fits into the grand situation. ... It all begins by creating a strong social-economic network. ... Build a team of quality people who can find other quality people who have sheer drive and/or resources. Your #1 strategy guy must emphasize this point, "In planning, no useless move. In strategy, no step is in vain. ..."

Re: Your Career in Politics

The BTP tends to be a advocacy for proposed budget item or revenue/tax proposal that involves big money. Sometimes BTP can help many people but often it only helps a few special interest groups and sometimes it can lead to a major disaster. For example, FDR's New Deal policy was a BTP which helped many people but Ronald Reagan-Stockman Trickle down economics policies of the 1980s only helped a few special interest grops while Banking Deregulation BTP was instrumental in triggering the 2007 Great Recession. Almost every politician will say they understand the BTP - but in reality most donot understand how to create strong social economic networks or build a team of quality people or have the skill brings things about. A politician can farm out tactics safely but a politician who farms out (and cannot formulate his own) strategy is only a puppet being controlled by a puppet master. A successful politician tend to be very likeable, but career politician have to be good at playing games.

Most people who go into politics do so with a particular advocacy in mind. For example, a parent of special needs child may go into politics to advocate for her child's special needs. Almost every political candidate normally has a vision or mission statement/goal/objectives before the win office that describes what they wish to accomplish. For example, in pre-WWII democratic Germany - we know that Adolf Hitler's goal was to get rid of all the Jews in Europe. These visions/goals tend to influence and drive a politician when he/she assumes power.
