it looks like there really is an east coast, west coast divide.
west coast must draw single guys for tech jobs. east coast... i dunno. someone mentioned magazines and fashion, but they have that in cali too surely.

as for nyc area having the most single women, i actually think i noticed that on my visits. it's entirely possible that it was just the random group makeup of my friends friends but when we went out it usually seemed like there were more women than men.

if that map comes from marriage statistics, then seeing how none of the areas show both a high percentage of single men and women, and only one of the two, this is really an issue of gender imbalance instead of the men or women being single. that there's a high percentage of singles of one gender is only a natural result of there being a gender imbalance.
