You can find rednecks (and yes, even rebel flags) in New York and Pennsylvania. There's a park named after Robert E. Lee in Baltimore. Does this make those places southern?

Alabama has hippies, gays, Catholics, Jews, and even a ski resort, among other things that people think don't exist here. Does this mean that we're a northern state?

We could debate this all day, which is why I won't
I'm not going to claim that Richmond is part of the Deep South like Alabama or Mississippi or anything like that, but there are long time families here who trace their roots back to plantation owners and slave owners. The descendants of Robert E. Lee and other Civil War generals still live there. The Museum of the Confederacy is located there as are the very famous statues of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. The State still celebrates Lee Jackson day as an official state holiday.

Virginia's a Southern State, part of the "New South." Outside of the DC suburbs, it has more in common with North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia than it has with any other states. I doubt you could say that the Carolinas and Georgia aren't really part of the South. Its not Alabama, but I don't think a state needs that to be considered part of the South.

^that's true. my best friend's boyfriend and his brothers are southern boys and the younger one has one displayed in his room. when i went to her house and saw it, i was like whoa....that's not good. but they're not racists. they're just proud of where they're from.

dang it, lethal. i meant my comment to come after altimaGTR's.

What's ironic given the stereotype of Southerners is that I've encountered much more racism up North than down South. Growing up in an Atlanta suburb, the evils of racism are so reinforced that many people bend over backwards to avoid being even giving off a hint of racism. Moving up North, I've found much less awareness and much more callousness if not outright racism.

well I'm quite secure in my identity as an asian-canadian, and as proven by my previous posts I am welcoming of other asians, whites, browns, whatever, as long as they are cool and not racist.

I also like to fool around with white ppl and have them guess where I'm from. They usually guess chiense first. (damn! that's correct. )

PS; Richmond, BC here in Canada is like THE place if you want to stay in North America and feel like you're in Asia. Probably not Richmond VA, eh. (that being the capital of the confederacy in the civil war and all.)

youre right... whites are the majority in the states overall. but in the cities, where most of the important politics take place, blacks are the majority. jackson is over 65% black i think. birmingham is over 70% black. new orleans is over 60% black.atlanta is over 60%...
historically the census has not been very accurate. whole communities in dallas were entirely disregarded for the census until the 1970's. it would not surprise me if the attitude persists in rural areas of the south.
the west dallas barrio was ignored by the census until the civil rights movement. in addition to this, race was just eyeballed by enumerators until recently. they looked at you and decided your race. there was no Asian category. black, white, or indian.

Well the funny thing is you could say the same things about Maryland which is obviously not the south. But I guess it's all relative.

I guess..................to me, if you're gonna include Virginia as "the South" you might as well throw in Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and Missouri, know what I mean? But I get what you're saying.

Eh.................that's Atlanta.

Growing up in Birmingham, I have NEVER known whites to bite their tongues when it comes to how they feel about blacks. I've heard the word "nigger" more times than most blacks in this country under the age of 40, I'll bet. And I'm not the only one, anybody from around here can attest to that. But I digress.

I mean shit, dude. I've seen fucking KKK rallies with my own eyes, I've seen them march in the streets of downtown Birmingham for god's sake. Brothers from Memphis, Jackson, Little Rock, and Dallas will tell you the same thing. I've never heard about them coming to Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, etc. Some southern cities seem to attract more of that type of people than others.

Just reverse engineer it and be mean and nasty. Then they'll laugh with you.

Until you start coming at people with a machete because they're not taking you seriously.
