Environmentally friendly shower gel & shampoo

I hear that shower gel and shampoo can be bad for the environment. Where can I find out more about this and if it's true, where can I buy environmentally friendly shower gels and shampoo?

Is that really true? If it's bad for the environment, imagine how bad it'd be for your skin/hair/eyes, etc.

Re: Environmentally friendly shower gel & shampoo

A friend recently switched from traditional store-bought shampoos and conditioners to natural hair products. She seems to have found success with Jason Hair Care products, specifically she uses the Biotin Shampoo and Conditioner. She alternates between the Jason conditioner and Nature's Gate The Original Herbal Hair Conditioner. The shampoo doesn't have SLS and it's certified 70% organic. It does have sodium myreth sulfate, which I imagine is supposed to be a "milder" detergent.

SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate and sodiun laureth sulfate) and –cone derivatives (dimethicones, silicones) are chemicals that are in almost all store-bought shampoos and conditioners. They're supposed to be bad for your hair in the long-term. SLS because it's a harsh detergent and the –cone derivatives because they make your scalp produce excess oil.

The website I linked above also has Jason bath soaps if you're interested. If you don't want to order online, you might check at your local Whole Foods Market or Trader Joe's.

I like Jason's and Nature's Gate products. Jason's is coming down in price as it gains shelf space in more grocery stores.
