Save Sun Ming Ming

Saw this post on Angryasianman:

So this gigantic Chinese basketball player Sun Ming Ming is in need of surgery to remove a benign tumor that is pressed against his pituitary gland: Chinese basketball player, 7' 8", in town for surgery. He and his people have been trying to raise $130,000 to pay for the procedure. Unfortunately, this article is dated August 17th, and only recently came to my attention... But here's a site that's trying to help raise some money: Save Sun Ming Ming

Re: Save Sun Ming Ming

wonder he would handle a running game. Anyway here's an update after his surgery.

Sun Ming Ming’s Giant Surgery

China’s budding basketball star, Sun Ming Ming, underwent surgery on September 26 to remove a life-threatening tumor from his pituitary gland. At the age of 21, Sun, who towers over 7’8" and who weighs a solid 360 pounds, has been dubbed the next Yao Ming of the NBA. He has officially declared for the 2005 draft and has a good chance of entering next season because of his sheer size. However, the towering asset which has made him famous is now endangering not only his dream but his life. Sun did not know that he had the medical condition acromegaly, more commonly known as “gigantism," until after he moved to the United States in 2005 to pursue dreams of basketball stardom. Medical testing concluded that the tumor in his brain, which suppresses testosterone and surrounding brain tissue, is the cause of Sun’s frequent headaches and high susceptibility to fatigue. Donations from supporters helped to raise half of the $100,000 Sun needed for this life-saving surgery.

The surgery, performed at Cedars Sinai, was successful, and he will now be able to live a normal life. However the money donated by supporters was only able to pay for the down payment of Sun’s surgery. He is now in financial debt and has worked out a payment plan with the doctor to pay out the rest of his medical bills while he works to rebuild his strength and his dream to play in the NBA. -- Queenie Pang

Re: Save Sun Ming Ming

He's in the ABA now:

7-foot-9 player joins ABA club

By HOWARD FENDRICH, AP Sports Writer

CHEVY CHASE, Md. (AP) -- The "have size, will travel" basketball odyssey that's taken 7-foot-9, 370-pound Sun Ming Ming from China to California to Kansas to North Carolina made its latest stop Wednesday in the back room of a Chinese restaurant in this tony Washington, D.C., suburb.

That's where the Maryland Nighthawks of the American Basketball Association introduced their newest player, a man they're touting as the tallest in the history of professional basketball.
Sun donned a uniform with the number 79 -- Get it? -- and his new team's owner and coach and a teammate all gushed about his "basketball IQ" and "soft hands."

The 23-year-old -- who complained the XXXXXXL sweat shirt the team gave him was too small -- was asked what his goals are.

"I hope," Sun said, "I make the NBA some day."

7'9" Chinese Sun Ming Ming becomes tallest professional basketball player.

Ming Ming, who will wear jersey number 79, is excited to start playing for the Nighthawks. When asked what his goal is, Ming Ming said “I want to play in the NBA.”

And even though Doyle would like to see Ming Ming finish the season in a Nighthawks uniform, Doyle agrees with Sun and knows he has the talent to play in the NBA.

“Obviously we’d like to keep him here the entire season, but if someone upstairs in the NBA wants a look at him, we’re not standing in the way of any of our players. Last season Randy had a good opportunity to go to Venezuela and he did. We do not stand in the way of any of our players and if Ming or Randy or any of our other players are called up we’ll take them there in a car or a plane or whatever it takes.”

Ming Ming will make his Nighthawks debut this Saturday, when the Nighthawks host the Strong Island Sound at 7:05 pm.
