Long names - no complaint, just an observation
Is there was a way to make a long screen name, like "armycommando_turned_doctor", wrap?

Unfortunately, not that I'm aware of. I forget how vBulletin truncates usernames (or if it does at all), but armycommando's account was imported from a previous system. A username of that length wouldn't be permitted now.

You could just change the username in the ACP, couldn't you? Replace the underscores with spaces?
Or you could edit the templates so the usernames are smaller.

Closing.
