Lady Gaga speaks out against anti-immigrant law in Arizona

Lady Gaga gets it. for a long time now i've believed that the denial of equal rights to the LGBT community are similar to the denial of equal rights in the past to racial minorities (though obviously not the exact same). it's great to see someone like Lady Gaga who is seen as such an icon in the LGBT community make a "cross over" and publicly speak out against SB 1070.

Now, in Phoenix AZ, Lady Gaga's latest show is again attracting controversy — but for another reason. As the Phoenix concert date approached, groups urged the singer to cancel her show as part of the boycott of Arizona over SB 1070. Gaga, though, refused to cancel the show. She had a different way to send a political message in mind.

Rather than follow the footsteps of Elton John and simply blowing off the boycott, Lady Gaga decided to educate her sold-out Arizona audience by speaking out against the anti-immigrant law. With the words “STOP SB 1070” written on her forearm, Gaga went on to explain her rationale for not cancelling the show. According to the artist, joining the boycott would be ineffective, as pop stars do not have the power to bring down the Arizona economy.

However, in her speech, Lady Gaga urged her fans to protest SB 1070, declaring that they should “reject any person or any thing or any law that have ever made you feel like you don’t belong.” She went on to say that “if it wasn’t for all of you immigrants, this country wouldn’t have s---t.”

Despite calls for Elton John to join the Sound Strike, an artist boycott of Arizona over the racial profiling that will be encouraged by SB 1070, the musician went ahead and held his scheduled concert in the controversial state.

Not only that, he had a message for those other artists taking a principled stand against a racist law: “We are all very pleased to be playing in Arizona. I have read that some of the artists won't come here. They are fuckwits! Let's face it: I still play in California, and as a gay man I have no legal rights whatsoever. So what's the fuck up with these people?”

I guess we won't be seeing anymore Gaga and Elton John duets. I'm really glad she's come out though- she's the biggest pop star to emerge this past decade, and I'm pretty sure she'll reign for the next if not the one after.

nah i doubt she holds any ill feelings toward Elton John's stance. but they sure did take different approaches.
