Post Techie Reminders

Backup often. Always store your backups off-site.

QUOTE:
Hacker Destroys Avsim.com, Along With Its Backups
el americano writes "Flight Simulator community website Avsim has experienced a total data loss after both of their online servers were hacked. The site's founder, Tom Allensworth, explained why 13 years of community developed terrains, skins, and mods will not be restored from backups: 'Some have asked whether or not we had back ups. Yes, we dutifully backed up our servers every day. Unfortunately, we backed up the servers between our two servers. The hacker took out both servers, destroying our ability to use one or the other back up to remedy the situation.'"

I hope we trash these like FDD soon.
There are much better options these days.

Re: Techie Reminders

bahaha.

that's almost as bad as that ohio intern who was fired because ohio was too cheap to hire a network admin to take home a backup tape, which the intern left in the car.

ohio owes the man a job since they didn't even give him instructions to bring the tape into his home and place under his pillow for safe keeping.

instead, an outgoing intern him told him to take the tape home.

tho the tape is worthless to most car thieves as you need a tape drive to extract the data.

When you have people who have no experience of seeing the grand picture, they will create a negative circumstance that would be the cause for a future (major) screw-up.

If the theft is "intent-driven", the perpetrator(s) would have done their will have the tape drive ready. The data storage medium has no real worth. The value is in the data.

Go to eBAY, Craigslist or your favorite techie marketplace and you will learn that securing a tape drive is not difficult. The key is to determine the specific type of tape drive and the software that the person was using.

I use them for doorstops.

Technology changes. Economic laws stay the same. ...

The physical size of popular techie devices gets smaller while its capacity and operating speed go up. Economically, if the demand goes up then the price goes down.

And with the decreased availability of second hand parts on older junk computers the price of the discontinued manufactured parts goes up. Right? Particularly with motherboards, LCD screens for LTs and stuff. Wow. Imagine how much a old ass tapedrive you are using as a doorstop must cost? Alot of $$$ I bet. Your throwing away money, what's wrong with you?

I dunno. Research it. I'm too busy studying. (Why I'm still logged in)

Someone actually asked me for a 3.5 FDD today. I think he might've been a bit stunned by my response.

Anyway, all this talk of tapes just reminded me of something worst then iomegas: Tandbergs.

I have clients out there still using these.

Nuff said,
