Asian Architects & Designers

Im not sure if this thread belongs in career, history, or travel.

But just want to mention my favorite Asian Architects.
I.M.Pei (China) and Andou Tadao (Osaka, Japan)
They have different approaches, Pei is on the abstract-modernist side,
while Andou is on the natural-landforms-environmental side, but they
each makes beautiful designs...

QUOTE:
I. M. Pei

(b. Canton, China 1917)

Ieoh Ming Pei was born in Canton, China in 1917. He left China when he was eighteen to study architecture at MIT and Harvard. Between 1942 and 1945, he worked as a concrete designer for Stone and Webster, and in 1946 he began work in the office of Hugh Asher Stubbins, in Boston.

Pei worked as an instructor and then as an assistant professor at Harvard before he joined Webb & Knapp Inc. in New York in 1948. Pei worked as the head of the architectural division of Webb and Knapp, Inc. until 1960, when he resigned and founded his own architectural office, I. M. Pei & Partners, New York, which in 1979 became Pei, Cobb, Free & Partners.

Due to his reliance on abstract form and materials such as stone, concrete, glass, and steel, Pei has been considered a disciple of Walter Gropius. However, Pei shows little concern with theory. He does not believe that architecture must find forms to express the times or that it should remain isolated from commercial forces.

Pei generally designs sophisticated glass clad buildings loosely related to the high-tech movement. However, many of his designs result from original design concepts. He frequently works on a large scale and is renowned for his sharp, geometric designs.

QUOTE:
Tadao Ando

(b. Osaka, Japan 1941)

Tadao Ando was born in Osaka, Japan in 1941. Unlike most contemporary architects, Ando did not receive any formal architectural schooling. Instead, he trained himself by reading and traveling extensively through Africa, Europe, and the United States. In 1970 he established Tadao Ando Architect & Associates.

Ando rejects the rampant consumerism visible within much of today's architecture. He responds both sensitively and critically to the chaotic Japanese urban environment, but maintains a connection to the landscape. Although Ando rejects cultural fads, he uses materials and forms to incorporate the materialism of modern society into his architecture. Accordingly, his concrete and glass buildings reflect, the modern progress underway in both Japan and the world.

In opposition to traditional Japanese architecture, Ando creates spaces of enclosure rather than openness. He uses walls to establish a human zone and to counter the monotony of commercial architecture. On the exterior, the wall deflects the surrounding urban chaos, while on the interior it encloses a private space.

Ando developed a radically new architecture characterized by the use of unfinished reinforced concrete structures. Using a geometric simplicity which reveals a subtlety and richness in spatial articulation, Ando has generated an architecture that shares the serenity and clarity that characterize traditional Japanese architecture.

No, but im a big fan of architecture and design theory. but who knows, i probably might have become an architect in another reality. i really like buildings though. Asian cultures have created some fantastic designs throught human history. As for modern buildings, like if i feel stressed out, i just go into a very beautiful building, contemplate its great design, loose myself in the beauty of the place, and i feel so relaxed...

Here's article about 4 more contemporary Asian Architects, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, in Kateigaho Magazine.

excellent work! i assume you are an archiecture major? a great course of study!

Another architect i like is Hara Hiroshi. His designs are very stand-out with a definite interest in drawing out the beauty of mechanical-technical designs. I like the futurism, which harkens back to the modernism of the 1960s but in an updated technology and materials. My faverites are the Umeda Sky Biru in Osaka and JR Kyoto Station in Kyoto. Umeda Sky Biru is a classic and really sticks out, totally no shyness by Hara there. I love it. Although i think there is a slight design flaw in the JR Kyoto station on level 2 by the escalators next to the cafe. Its a total bottleneck, and Hara probably didnt anticipate that many people might transfer along the parallel concourse on level 2 to view the central lobby under the glass frame atrium, rather than go out into the front of the station, which is too roundabout. Certainly he has his critics, but all in all Hara's designs are fun to roam around in.

A collection of Hara Hiroshi's designs, click on the left side to go to each site.

Re: Asian Architects & Designers

There are lots of good (& famous) Japanese architects aside from Ando. Most of the really good architecture magazines are Japanese actually. There are also a number of respected Asian American architects. See http://www.twbta.com/ & http://www.suyamapetersondeguchi.com/ for starters. I'm not fond of Pei's Louvre entrance...
Don't forget fashion designer Vera Wang. I love her clothes!
