sexist asian proverbs

there's this saying in cantonese that a man should never give his wife a full meal until she's 60 years old. i don't understand the reasoning behind this, but people say it all the time and it irks me.

know of any other ones?

Re: sexist asian proverbs

augh.
in korean there's this saying
namja neun ha neul
yuja neun ddang.

man is sky/heaven.
woman is ground/earth.

i guess you can't have one without the other.
but to me it just means
women are below men.

Re: sexist asian proverbs

I wouldn't be surprised if you found a plethora of sexist asian proverbs. Asian (at least East Asian) societies and cultures in general (if not all) are even more patriarchical (hierarchy with males on top) than western cultures and generally are not as progressive (if you count such movement as moving upwards) in the area of women's rights, equality, etc.

well western civilization had their sexist tendencies too. It was only after the advent of working middle class did men and women have more equal holding. so basically that was at most 100 years ago.

Well yeah obviously. American society is still arguably very sexist and patriarchical, and women are still oppressed and denied equal opportunity. The average woman makes 76 cents to the dollar compared to a man for the exact same amount of work in the US. I'm just saying that currently in many if not all East Asian societies, the disparity between the sexes in terms of socio-economic equality is even greater. I'd have to say that the US (and perhaps Canada and other European countries) is much more progressive in this area, but that's just my opinion. Progressive but not perfect, obviously. Far from it.

Re: sexist asian proverbs

anyway i went to this thing at my comm college called "eating tofu" which is a reference to a woman's "tofu" (breasts) being umm, taking advantage of by a man. well figuratively it means a man courting a woman and then taking advantage of her i think. the purpose of the conference was that "eating tofu" is a taboo subject and that the conference was to bring it out in the open.
