Mainland US Media Painting Hawaii as White

Do any of you notice this? It annoys me a lot, especially since I'm sorta from there. There's been shows and movies based in Hawaii, and I'm always wondering why 60-90% of the cast is all White.

Honolulu is about 80% Asian, Hapa, or Pacific Islander, and that's not even counting the big number of tourists, who're mostly Asian from Asia.

Basically I notice the media in general seems to paint places as Whiter than they really are. Talking w/ some friends back in MN they didn't even know that Hawaii had so many Asians and they just assumed that Hawaii was plainbread White 'like everywhere else'.

Anyone else notice things similar to this and is annoyed?

I've started to notice it with the show, North Shore. I saw a poster promoting the show and was thinking, "What the heck?" It pissed me off since I lived in that area for 2 years and Asians far outnumbered whites.

I noticed North Shore too. It pissed me off too, esp since they show no regard for the true population of Hawaii. By now, America probably thinks Hawaii has only two races/ethnicities, White and Hawaiian.

Honolulu is 80% asian? Damn....................I think it's the only city in America with that many asians then, I know not even cities on the West Coast have that many asians.

Yes, it is true. I've experienced it myself and was very astonished when I saw so many Asians there.

I noticed that as well. all white on North Shore. funny, since I have mad family on the "north shore" and there as mad Samoans/Tongans etc up that way. welcome to the Empire Hawai'i, you know youre incorporated now.

haha...i've noticed the lame ass show "the north shore" too.....

i used to live in hawaii, and it is a fact that "haoles" [white mainlanders] are the minority on those islands.

well american idol had plenty of color but they werent what u would call "marketable"

and i know rationalizing racism doesnt make it feel any better but yeah, s'all about drawing numbers from the white community as larry bird would say

True, even though we don't like it, the US does have to market a White-friendly image of everything.

Many times Hawaii might as well be another prefacture of Japan. Many Japanese tourists are trying places like Las Vegas because they feel that Hawaii is too much like Japan. If only they could get gambling to be legalized in HI...

but most hawaiians would still like to be part of the U.S, though, to keep benefits such as U.S citizenship and tourist from mainland, military base economy...etc.

so if there's a referendum on independence today, it would fail in a landslide. [there's only a small % of native hardcore independent adovcates....i had a hawaiian language teacher like that in elementary school ]

I remember a National Geographic article on a Hawaiian independence movement among some hardcore Hawaiians. It was interesting, but being a state helps the economy a lot.

thats because it is. it was stolen from its monarchy by white revolutionaries and then annexed by the US. and the vote that made it a state had no option for independance "state or not". they never had the choice. its effectively a colony.

not to knock it but I feel bad for the Hawaiian people who lost a great monarchy and tradition. I feel for my brothers and sisters.

i'm really disappointed by North Shore. i guess i shouldn't be, since it's by the creators of The O.C. Jason Momoa barely gets any screentime, and the rest of the cast and most of the extras are white.
I've only been to North Shore once, but i recall that it's more local and native hawaiian, as opposed to touristy white. they should just call the show Waikiki instead.

fortunately, the show sucks ass. the storylines are terrible, some of the acting is horrid, the cast is really bland-looking (save for jason momoa ) and it's just too glossy. i'm pretty sure it'll get cancelled before the season's up.

I really cant say that I got the storyline on that show, but Im not going to be watching it.
