To kill or not to kill?

I have two small wasps nests that are being built on my detached garage. One of the nests is right above the door that I use to enter the garage. I've seen the mother wasp chilling on the nest, but she's never bothered me, even though I pass through at least twice a day.
I really hate killing anything, particularly if it's not inside the house. I will make an occasional exception for a scary looking spider.
Now I can't decide whether I should pick up a can of wasp killer or leave them alone. I figure the mother wasp hasn't attacked because, if she did, it would result in destruction of the nest. But what happens once her brood is born?
Maybe I need to take care of the problem now so that I don't have to destroy more nests in the future? What to do, what to do...=P

Well the wasps may possibly damage the detached garage with the nests that they create. So for that reason I would suggest exterminating the wasps before it gets out of hand.

Really? They can cause damage? Didn't know that. I thought it just hung there. Time to google... Thanks!

Yeah, it happened to my garage when I was still living with parents back in the days. The wasp nests started to cause the wood awning on the concrete structure to rot.

You need to know what type of wasps they are. Yes, I know that looks like a very ridiculously minor detail but it will determine if you need to get rid of them and how soon.
edited to say I totally did not mean to sound like I was commanding you. lol. THOU SHALT CALL AN EXTERMINATOR! |

Knock them both down with a baseball bat, pour kerosene over them and watch them burn.
I hate insects. |

There's always the redneck solution: shotgun. A shotgun is the redneck's Swiss Army knife. True story.

Still deciding what to do. As I delay my decision, I can see the individual chambers being capped, presumably as mother wasp lays eggs in each chamber.

You have all the answers, right here, so stop the google search and save yourselves hundreds of dollars from having to call an exterminator..
Try these steps compiled from all the suggestions given in this blog. Beehive keeper outfit gear is optional. 1) Knock dem wasps down with a bat. 2) Use a flammable substance such as kerosene, gasoline or charcoal lighter fluid. 3) Use a flamethrower if you like to ignite the flames quickly. Knock the hives off your garage first. (You're burning the hives, NOT the garage right? ) Light dem bitches up. Problem solved. 4) Shotgun option: Theoretically it can work but I'm not sure what gun laws are like in SolCal so . . . . |

Take the wasp's nest to court and throw it at the judge ...

Oddly, this problem seems to have solved itself.
Yesterday I noticed that the number of wasps congregating on the nest seemed to have grown significantly. I decided I'd better put an end to the hive before it got too far out of control, and then I'd have to hire an exterminator. When I got home today, I looked up and the nest was gone! There were a couple of wasps chilling up there, but no nest! I looked around and saw a small piece of the nest on the ground below the area it was previously hanging. I wonder what took it out. Bird, perhaps? Oh well. I feel bad for the wasps, but at least this saved me the guilt of having to use insecticide on the critters. |

The stupid wasps can't take the hint and are already in the process of rebuilding the nest.=P

Oh they're not stupid....they know exactly what they're doing. Annoying you: check. Sensing your reluctance to kill them: check. Using that reluctance against you to build their new empire: check.
